Water and Life Conservation in the Tamanduá and Poções Sustainable Development Reserve
Water and Life Conservation in the Tamanduá and Poções Sustainable Development Reserve
The project focuses on strengthening the initiatives of traditional communities in a territory yet to be consolidated/recognized as a protected area, under the category of Sustainable Development Reserve, called Tamanduá (anteater) and Poções in the municipality of Riacho dos Machados. Over time, communities have been suffering from threats from large companies in the mining and eucalyptus reforestation sector, which have threatened communities and, thus, reducing access to water and land. Mainly in the last decades the region has been suffering with the biggest water scarcity never seen in history. In this context, the project comes as a way to strengthen the initiatives of the local communities, aiming to expand productive, commercial and knowledge exchange opportunities between the peoples of the territory.

Communities are more aware of their rights, as they are denouncing the main difficulties they have been facing. This is happening thanks to the process of awareness received by partners. Community organization processes continue to take place, such as holding community meetings, religious meetings and masses among other means of dialogue. In other words, each community has its own dynamics.
