Integrated land and water resources management in Thaba T?ehla Ha khoanyane
Integrated land and water resources management in Thaba T?ehla Ha khoanyane
Project Summary

Thaba T?ehla Grazing Association consists of seven villages namely, Moreneng, Nthoaneng, Lumelang, Mcucung, Mohlakala, Lifotholeng and Naledi. The Association is based in Ha Khoanyane on the way to Katse Dam. The Association was established in 2021, with the purpose of promoting sustainable land and water resources management, through protection of wetlands and conserving rangelands for improved livestock production and prevention of soil erosion. Majority of people living in the rural areas depend more on agricultural activities such as livestock rearing (merino sheep and angora goats) and cattle for their livelihoods. The Association comprises both men and women even though, it is a male dominated Association due to rural norms which makes women to be reluctant to join the grazing association as they think it?s a men?s territory.
Ha Khoanyane is small village in Thaba Tseka district which is facing a great pressure on its natural resources hence rangeland and wetland ecosystems of Ha Khoanyane are endangered. Threats to these ecosystems include among others, overstocking, uncontrolled fires, inadequate enforcement of regulations, low technical capacity and weak governance on natural resource management, climate change impact, and lack of knowledge transfer from one generation to another coupled with ignorance of the need for sustainable management of natural resources.
General Objective
The main objective of the project is Sustainable Land Management, with emphasis on integrated management of land and water resources for improved agricultural production and resilient natural ecosystems and livelihoods of Thaba T?ehla community .
Specific objectives:
a) Strengthen efforts towards awareness creation about sustainable management of rangelands and wetlands resources among local communities and authorities.
b) Augment efforts for conservation of threatened ecosystems, with particular attention to medicinal plants and wildlife in general; and the cultural heritage of Thaba T?ehla
c) Strengthening involvement of youth, women and people with disabilities in conservation
d) Promote and demonstrate technologies for water harvesting and efficient use of water for improved and climate smart agricultural activities
e) Implementation of alternative non-extractive income generating activities for diversification and resilience of livelihoods of local communities.
Key expected Results:
The project will impact seven villages (Moreneng, Nthoaneng, Lumelang, Mcucung, Mohlakala, Lifotholeng and Naledi) in the area of Ha Khoanyane and neighborhoods and the main beneficiaries will be Association members, livestock owners, and youth including herders, women and people with disabilities. The main expected results during the operation of the project are:

c) Local communities more equipped with knowledge and skills for proper management of natural resources.
d) The local communities have the ability to respond and adapt to climate change impacts.
