Empowering women for secure water catchment Forest Protection for Sustainable Community Water Supply
: Empowering women for Secure Water catchment forest protection for sustainable community water supply.
Description: This project is will address the issues of loss of biodiversity due to destruction of it?s natural habitat and
putting mechanism that would help improve livelihood and conservation of forest.
Tanna Island is a biodiversity hotspot in Vanuatu with 11 endemic plants found that have local use. Increasing population
couple with the increase slash and burning of natural vegetation to gardening for food crops resulted unintentional
removal of significant plants. The loss of forest and fallow period of gardening are becoming shorter each year is
potentially leading to land degradation on the island. Many riverine streams in the island have drainage that have
coverage of large part of forest land areas but due to the high due to loose soil structure that it limited to hold water at
surface are shorter streams. Local people needed to be empowered to mainstreamed forest protection in their daily
livelihood to support global biodiversity protection and mitigate climate change. Thus in the Mountain range of Ekurup
vegetation will require revegetation after the modification of the vegetation by cyclone PAM in 2015 and further
regeneration suppression by the continuous volcanic acidic ash fall.
