Santa Biritia piggery waste management project
In Kiribati, pigs are valuable, and they are often used as customary foods for national events or family important occasions. Because of their significant value, pigs are often kept in an open space or tied next to households. Santa Biritia community is one of the communities valuing the important of pigs and therefore pigs are kept in an adhoc fashion meaning they are given the freedom to roam, and some are tied next to trees or even to houses. Emerging environmental and health impacts associated with the poor piggery wastes management prompted Santa Biritia community members to implement the piggery waste management project.
The project aims to address the poor piggery wastes management which will specifically focus on a construction of a proper and environmentally designed community pigpen. The project will also link to the agricultural activities through the provision of compost from dried piggery wastes. Part and parcel of the project will include capacity building on construction skills, composting techniques, and agricultural skills. The project is strategic for Santa Biritia community economic initiatives, food security, public health and environmental protection.
The GEF SGP will result in mobilizing resources to support an improved piggery waste management project as a demonstration project centered at addressing environmental and health challenges associated with the poor piggery wastes management. It will also help Santa Biritia to build networks with the Ministry of Environment, Lands and Agriculture and other communities who are also pursuing the similar concept. Lastly the project will eventually become a source of revenue for community members who are dependent on agricultural home- based products for their main source of income.
The direct beneficiaries of the project include men, women, youth, children as well as disabled people.
