Marau Turtle Nesting and Conservation Project-Tavarao Island
This project is a conservation initiative to fully protecting Tavarao Island in Marau Sound as a turtle breeding site. This will involve monitoring, surveillance, nesting data collection, satellite tracking etc.
Objectives are: to increase the population of Hawksbill, Green and Flat back Turtles locally by enhancing an increase from 2 to 50 turtles? nests on Tavarao Island by December 2021; Establishment of Tavarao Island as a conservation site for nesting; Capacity building of community members in terms of turtle monitoring, scientific knowledge and conservation management skills, and Establishment of a co-management framework for project sustainability.
Expected outputs are:
1. Tavarao Island reserved for conservation
2. Tavarao Island Community Management Plan established
3. Other tribal groupings included turtle monitoring and project awareness
