SGP has established and provided funding for a project, being Buchanan Coastline Landscaping Project. The remaining space of land on the reclaimed and landscaped coastline of Buchanan is been encroached upon by individuals for the construction of makeshift structures which is changing the beauty and purpose of the facility. Nearby community dwellers poses a very serious threat to the sanitation of the remaining reclaimed land space. There has been evidence of the community using the area for open for defecation and dumping of garbage especially at night. Efforts are being made by the government and its development partners to reduce the impacts of erosion to the City of Buchanan. The government of Liberia and its development partner, UNDP with support from the Global Environmental Funds (GEF), has constructed an environmentally friendly coastline protection breakwater system to break the ocean tides and stop the erosion. The project used engineering solutions to construct the break-wall employing international best practice. These efforts however, need to be sustained by taking pre-emptive action to deal with the above issues that are already rearing their heads. Therefore, the City Corporation is seeking additional funding to implement actions to mitigate the above issues which will protect and prevent the misuse of UNDP/GEF earlier funded Buchanan Coastline breakwater system. The proposal seeks to sustain the gains that have been made in the reduction of coastal erosion, landscaping and beautification of the reclaimed area along the coast of Buchanan. The interventions would enhance social and economic impacts of a GEF funded project for Buchanan City.
