Empowering coastal communities towards sustainability via transformation of wastes into wealth
Empowering coastal communities towards sustainability via transformation of wastes into wealth
The current situation on Sungai Selangor has become a pressing issue to the local stakeholders, namely state authorities, villagers, tour guides and the local boating club which depends on the tourism activity of firefly watching in Kampung Kuantan. The issue of waste and trash being dumped into the river has caused adversities, mainly pollution, eyesore, erosion of riverbanks due to high loads, flooding and the reduction of fireflies habitat at the riverside.

The project aim to collect organic and plastic wastes from the river which is mainly used for ecotourism. The collected organic wastes such as wood, barks, branches and wood based
materials are to be dried, shredded and burned in biochar retort kiln to produce biochar. This material
will be used as a soil amelioration product to increase soil fertility of degraded coastal areas such as at
the location as well as used as an additional material for the establishment of mangrove seedlings which are used for mangrove rehabilitation programmes for CSR projects. Besides that MSSS will establish trial plots using mangrove seedlings and agricultural crops to assist the community on application rates, measurements of plant growth. This is mainly for them to gain the experience in production and
utilization of biochar.in a proper manner. By executing this project, we expect that the river cleaning will take place voluntarily to reduce the pollution; wastes from the river can be transformed into useful by products for agriculture and forestry, the effects of CO2 emissions can be reduced by decaying wood since it is transferred into stable product that resides in soil and the farmers and nursery managers may save costs related to utilization of chemical fertilizers for their plant productivity
