Activities undertaken during the first phase of the project

Completed a baseline survey to generate an analysis and report on plastic waste, however, the research on plastic waste types, production, usage, and disposal has been completed. Field data has been collected.

Imams, Pastors, Teachers, Youth Leaders, Women Focus Group Leaders, Traditional Leaders, and Assembly Members of eight electoral areas from the two municipal assemblies (La Dade Kpotopon and Korley Klottey) were engaged through inception meetings in their various electoral areas by introducing the project to them, taking them through scheduled activities planned for their communities, and integrated zero-plastic management model based on the conditions in the selected Municipalities as well as on how they can help us implement the project in their communities.

A consultant was contracted to develop training materials for stakeholder training and waste management promotional material and awareness.

Over 70 stakeholders comprising of Faith Actors, Traditional Leaders, Assemblymen, Youth and Women groups from the La Kpana electoral region participated in a clean-up exercise at the Laboma lagoon as part of the events planned to commemorate World Ocean Day. As part of raising awareness through the media, Metro TV and La Tenu, a local radio stationed in the La Dade Kpotopon municipal assembly, covered the exercise. Youth groups,?the executive director of the Light foundation, an assembly member and?a traditional leader?were interviewed to discuss the significance of the day.

On June 9,2022, over 90 stakeholders, dignitaries from the various municipal assemblies, such as representatives from the various municipal assemblies, the Director of the Environmental Protection Agency, and a facilitator from the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation, as well as religious leaders from both Islamic and Christian perspectives, attended the project's launch and training at the Miklin hotel.

The level of commitment displayed, and questions asked by participants during the training session indicated that the stakeholders understood the facilitators' training. And were willing to fully participate to successfully implement the project in their respective communities. The stakeholders also demonstrated their knowledge of the project through the questions they asked and the recommendations they made to help the project be implemented in their community.

The project also:

Initiated public environment awareness campaign in single use plastic, and alternative uses of plastics in churches, mosques, schools, hospitals, and other institutions using the trained stakeholders as ambassadors.

Undertook 8 awareness and education engagement meetings in plastic waste management with 2 communities from each of the 2 selected municipalities.

Involved both TV and Radio to increase in the awareness campaign within the project location and beyond.

Identified plastic waste stakeholders (Government, civil society, private sector, community leaders as user representatives) in the 2 selected Municipalities.

Undertook four engagement meetings for awareness raising and to advocate for policies and regulations for alternative use, ban, recycle, etc. for single use plastics.

Identified and train 100 youth (50 from each municipality) to train households and to collect waste from homes and designated points within the town.

Supported 200 households in the implementation of the integrated plastic waste management program.

Purchased and installed 20 bins to accommodate the different types of plastic waste within the 2 municipalities.

How can the Municipal assembly collaborate with the Light Foundation to help them implement this project in the communities?

Is there going to be any equipment incentive distributed to the communities to help undertake plastic waste exercises in the communities?

Where will the collected plastic waste be disposed of?

Is there any plastic waste policy in place to help curb the situation?

How often will the clean-up exercise take place in the communities?

Is there a possibility to renew the project after the sensitization period?

How often will the plastic waste collected at the vantage points be collected to prevent piling them for longer times?





Activities planned and completed this reporting period and results achieved during the second phase of the project.

House-to-House Awareness Training on Plastic Waste Management and Sanitation: Between September 1 and October 1, 2022, The Light Foundation's 12-person project management team conducted an awareness training campaign on plastic waste management and sanitation. The campaign targeted 115 residents, including 30 compound houses, 15 in each municipality. The campaign focused on educating residents about the need to reduce plastic waste and the harm caused by plastic pollution to the environment. Educational materials were provided to participants during the campaign.

World Clean-up Day Cleanup Exercise alone the Odor river basin in Odornaa of Korley Klotter Municipal assembly: A cleanup exercise was conducted in the Odoornaa neighborhood of the Korle Klottey Municipality on September 17, 2022, as part of World Clean-up Day activities. A total of 105 community volunteers, along with 15 employees and volunteers from the Light Foundation, participated in the cleanup exercise, which ran from 6:00 am to 12:00 pm. The campaign was successful in raising awareness about the issue and encouraging residents to take action to reduce plastic waste in their neighborhood. Many residents expressed a desire to plan frequent community clean-up events and to push for more trash cans and waste collection services. Many also made commitments to reduce their own plastic usage and to properly dispose of plastic waste in the future.

Purchase of Tricycles for Plastic Collection: The tricycles will be sent to the municipalities, and an orientation will be held for the community members on their usage and maintenance. The tricycles will be handed over to the community waste management team and will be put into use for the collection of plastic waste. The tricycles were chosen for their maneuverability and efficiency in navigating through the communities and collecting plastic waste.

Installation of Plastic Waste Bins: The Light Foundation, under the leadership of CEO Sheikh Ali Napari, carried out an initiative between August 1st and September 1st, 2022, to install 50 new bins for the proper disposal of various types of plastic waste in 8 communities in the municipalities of La Dade Kotopon and Korle Klottey. The project management team, led by the CEO, worked closely with the corresponding assembly members for the areas to plan and execute the initiative. The community members in the areas where the bins were installed were extremely grateful for the new facilities and the efforts of the Light Foundation to improve waste management in their neighborhoods. They were seen actively making use of the new bins and encouraged the continuation of this campaign.

Held a stakeholders review meetings to address the use of plastic materials and identify alternates and recommend reuse, recycle and proper disposing of plastic waste as a way in managing plastic waste. The stakeholders also demonstrated their knowledge of the project through the questions they asked and the recommendations they made to help the project be implemented in their community.

Held a consultation with stakeholders on appropriate policies and regulations to support single-use plastic and the implementation of the integrated zero-plastic strategy.

Extended our public environment awareness campaign in single use plastic, and alternative uses of plastics in churches, mosques, schools, hospitals, and other institutions using the trained stakeholders as ambassadors.

Formulated By-laws during our consultation with the key stakeholders in Korley Klottey and La Dade Kotopon Municipalities on appropriate policies and regulations to support single-use plastic and to achieve the objective of the implementation of the integrated zero-plastic strategy

Proper disposal of plastic waste is crucial in reducing plastic pollution and preserving the environment. The Light Foundation's initiative to install these specialized bins in 8 communities is an important step in addressing this problem. It is essential that we all work together to ensure that our communities are kept clean and safe for future generations.

The campaign was successful in raising awareness about the issue and encouraging residents to take action to reduce plastic waste in their neighborhood. Many residents expressed a desire to plan frequent community clean-up events and to push for more trash cans and waste collection services. Many also made commitments to reduce their own plastic usage and to properly dispose of plastic waste in the future.

Following the cleanup exercise, all participants underwent a brief training session on the value of good hygiene and the need to develop the habit of regularly keeping their surroundings clean. All participants received flyer, brochures, and stickers to further their understanding of the value of cleanliness.

One of the major challenges was getting residences to adopt segregation and re-aggregation of plastic waste when disposing off. They combine continue to disposed off waste of all type together. So during our House to House Sensitization we took residence through on what and how to segregate waste which really helped.

Without any incentives, some residents were hesitant to support the cleanup process. They assert that the government or leaders talks about solving the waste problem, but in reality, they don?t do anything.

Some youth organizations set up recycling centers where they purchase plastic waste. Despite the fact that they don't make much money, they assert that it's also a means of keeping the neighborhood clean. they consequently ask for assistance from institutions to obtain larger recycling centers.

Since it would take some time for the community to get used to the regular clean-up exercise, community leaders raised the question of whether the Light Foundation will do more cleanup operations each year after the project is completed.

Some people emphasized that the government should involve the community in the planning and implementation of issues in the community especially on waste management.

Others questioned whether the UNDP SGP and Light Foundation will maintain their waste and plastic management efforts in the Community for a sizable period of time after the current project period.
