Promoting Behavioural Change, environmental education, and Advocacy on Zero Plastic Waste management in Korle-Klottey, and La-Dade-Kotopon Municipalities in Greater Accra Region.
The overall goal of the project is to drive behavioural change, advocacy, and education to promote integrated zero plastic waste management among urban communities in Ghana. The specific project objectives are:
- To create environmental awareness and education to generate public participation (using religious leaders) in integrated zero plastic waste management.
- To establish a cost-effective zero plastic waste management system in Korle-Klottey, and La-Dade-Kotopon municipalities in the Greater Accra region in the collection, separation, and disposal of plastic waste.
-To support the municipal assemblies in policy formulation to minimize the single use of plastic.
Expected Project Outputs/Activities
Project Output1
Integrated zero-plastic management model developed, adopted, and promoted in Korle-Klottey, and La Dade-Kotopon Municipalities in Greater Accra.
Planned Activities
Generate a baseline analysis and report on plastic waste types, production, usage, and disposal
Consult stakeholders and formulate and integrated zero-plastic management model based on the conditions in Korle-Klottey, and La Dade-Kotopon Municipalities.
Identify religious leaders, teachers, heads of institutions, youth organizations and train them in the implementation of the integrated zero-plastic waste management.
Prepare awareness and education materials on plastic waste management
Initiate public environment awareness campaign in single use plastic, and alternative uses of plastics in churches, mosques, schools, hospitals, and other institutions using the trained volunteers.
Organize 8 awareness and education engagement meetings in plastic waste management with 2 communities from each of the 3 selected municipalities
Identify/contract Radios and TV stations to be involved in the awareness campaign
Organize a periodic cleanup campaign on June 8th World Ocean?s Day (8th June 2022) in 2 municipalities, World Clean-up Day on the third Saturday of September (17 Sept 2022) to build the culture of cleanup activities.
Output 2: - 100 households (50 for each Municipality) trained and supported in the collection, separation, and disposal of plastic waste.
Planned Activities: -
Identify plastic waste stakeholders (Government, civil society, private sector, community leaders as user representatives) in the 4 selected Municipalities.
Hold 4 engagement meetings for awareness raising and to advocate for policies and regulations for alternative use, ban, recycle, etc. for single use plastics.
Select and train 100 youth (25 from each municipality) to train households and to collect waste from homes and designated points within the town.
Select and support 200 households in the implementation of the integrated plastic waste management program
Conduct awareness training for selected families, families to be gathered in small groups or conduct house to house outreach.
Purchase and install 120 bins to accommodate the different types of plastic waste
Purchase and supply 2 tricycles (one for each Municipality) to collect plastic waste to designated places.
Output 3: To Support policy formulation through advocacy among plastic waste stakeholders through awareness raising to ban single use plastic

Conduct a review of the Municipal environment policies on Plastic waste and identify the gaps
Identify and collaborate with all relevant stakeholders
Hold consultation with stakeholders on appropriate policies and regulations to support single use plastic and the implementation of the integrated zero-plastic strategy
Formulate the relevant regulations and byelaws on single use plastic and the implementation of the integrated zero-plastic strategy
Support the Municipal Assemblies in the implement guidelines and regulation on zero plastic management strategy
