Develop a participatory action plan for sustainable agriculture to improve the Hour al-Azim Wetland resilience in Karkheh Basin, Khuzestan
Overall objective / activities to be implemented under the grant:
As far as the principles of sustainable development and ecological principles are concerned, a sustainable solution to revive and stabilize the ecological conditions of Hur al-Azim Wetland, is supply of sufficient water from Karkheh drainage basin water resources, and attention to the balance of uses and activities on the margins and bed of Hur al-Azim. At present, due to the high rate of consumption in the agricultural sector in the basin (especially in Khuzestan Province) and low productivity in this sector, the main strategy for balancing resources is to manage and reduce water consumption.
Farmers are the main consumers of Karkheh River?s water resources. Due to the dependence of their livelihood on the water, water stress and droughts have the greatest impact on their income status. The decline in the farmers? income and the increase in poverty in recent years, along with the outbreak of the Coronavirus have led to widespread dissatisfaction by the group.
The aim of this project is empowerment, capacity building, improved interactions between stakeholders with an emphasis on local communities (farmers) and finally develop and implementation of a sustainable agricultural participatory action plan using upstream plans (sustainable agricultural operational plan based on the characteristics of Karkheh drainage basin) aimed to involve all beneficiaries at three national, regional, and local levels.
The process will take place through specialized facilitation for capacity building and participation of farmer beneficiaries to design and develop a sustainable agricultural action plan at the level of villages of Karkheh drainage basin in Khuzestan Province and its implementation in 2 pilot villages and comparison of the results achieved with 1 control village.
