"Green Book" eco-education using information and communications technology (ICT) tools

The Green Book project aims to create environmental modules for schoolchildren and integrate them with Information and communications technology (ICT) tools, which are an integral part of education nowadays, including teaching and learning. A created task force consisting of respective experts and teachers will design modules, covering from earth science basics to climate change mitigation and adaptation solutions and technologies. Web-based ICT multimedia tools will be used to communicate and connect environmental modules to teachers, schoolchildren, and other stakeholders and make it accessible even in an isolated village. By completing the course and implementation of any scale environmental project ?Green Hero? certificates will be granted to participants.

Project Characteristics and Results

Policy Influence

By creating multi-stakeholder partnerships, including already formed partnerships with the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports, the project adopts a bottom-up and top-down approach to improve the knowledge, skills, and attitude of all beneficiaries leading to better environmental behavior and progress. In addition, introducing and piloting ICT tools and using education platforms can supplement the educational chain for better communication, dissemination, storage, and information management.

Planning non gef grant

The idea of developing the Green Book project emerged during the preparation of educational modules for schoolchildren within the framework of the "Green Skills for Youth" project, which was successfully implemented by the "Women in Climate and Energy" NGO and funded by the UNDP-GEF Small Grants Program. It is proposed to scale up the project by combining it with successfully implemented "Green Skills for Youth" project concept and applying for financing to different donors in partnership with the Government and in coalition with the respective CSOs.

Project sustainability

The project aims to achieve systemic change in Armenia's environmental education sector. The developed modules will be reviewed and approved by the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sport of Armenia. This agreement with the Ministry makes the project highly feasible to bring systemic change and enter into the academic curriculum. The electronic modules will be placed on various digital platforms. The Women in Climate and Energy NGO's website will be the primary host of the modules. Besides, an initial agreement was reached with the AUA Acopian Environmental Center for the Environment to place the developed materials on the center's digital platform. During the project implementation, an agreement will be reached with other digital mediums for placing the modules, such as Khan Academy, Udemy, Ministry's website, etc.

Replication of project activities

The project uses an innovative method of module development ? the cooperation of an expert teacher will make sure that the content of the modules is comprehensive and approached from all prisms ?both by developers and users. The project will be backed by the agile method of development ? the modules will be tested and piloted, then based on the end-user feedback, the experts will make necessary adjustments before the final delivery of the results. This process of development is proved to be effective in many disciplines, particularly in IT product development. Grounding on this, we believe that the technical implementation of the project is replicable, and the content of the project can serve as a ground for both similar and larger-scale environmental education and other discipline product development.

Project Results

The project will result in the creation of:
? educational Modules: Green Book
? digitized Educational Modules: E-Green Book accessible in the selected open-source educational platforms and media channels
? Green Hero Certificates for successful completion of the modules and reported environmental action.
? The total number of the direct beneficiaries is 3000 (1600 females and 1400 males)
? The the project impacts 30 NGOs and about 1400 community organizations, particularly schools, making sure that each marz of Armenia is represented by a youth organization as well.
? The project impact will be measured towards the following KPIs:
? This project plans a larger impact, and the following actions will lead to the project's success: 2-day workshop for teachers and experts,
? 5 expert groups organized, modules developed,
? modules piloted at least in 1 school,
? methodology and plot developed for presenting the topics in respective ICT tools,
? approved and licensed educational material,
? educational website created, available also from the websites of related parties through Green button on their websites,
? audio and video materials for YouTube and Soundcloud, and finally,
? the creation of Green Hero Certificate format, rules, and automation of the process.
