Action for Trees of City Streets
Large, mature and monumental street trees provide many important benefits such as improving air quality, reducing the amount of energy consumed, slowing down the flow of rainwater, regulating the climate, contributing to urban aesthetics, encouraging people to walk, strengthening neighborhood ties and improving connection with nature. The project namely, ?Nature at My Door? focuses on the conservation and sustainable management of the existing street trees in the neighborhoods of Bahçelievler, Yukar? Bahçelievler and Emek within the boundaries of Çankaya Municipality under the scope of neighborhood commons. This project is an awareness-raising and advocacy project that aims to show the importance of street trees for climate-resilient settlements, to make visible the benefits they provide in terms of ecosystem services and it is an advocacy project to ensure the sustainability of the existing street trees. Activities and meetings will be held within the participation of all the related stakeholders to increase the awareness of the city administration and the general public about the critical role of street trees in the process of making resillient settlements under the effects of climate change. The project is also a pilot study on how to organize participatory processes for the creation and monitoring of the Urban Tree Atlas database, which is necessary for the sustainable management of street trees located on the pavements and in public spaces. In this context, the project proposes the conduction of a series training and field studies with the residents of the neighborhood under the leadership of the Neighbourhood Association. The training and field studies will focus on about how to collect data that can be updated continuously and reveal the environmental, aesthetic and economic benefits of street trees through the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and a phone application. Field studies, training meetings, project briefing and evaluation meetings will be held interms of awareness activities. In addition, a festival, a photography competition and an exhibition are planned with the participation of the neighbours and stakeholders. Thanks to the events, a change is expected in the implementation processes and approaches of local governments regarding the importance of the existing street trees under the scope of achieving the climate resilient city goal. In addition, it is expected that the residents of the neighborhood will strengthen their social ties by preserving the value added by the presence of trees to the environment they live in.
