The Barbados Youth Climate Action Summit and Expo
a. Lack of dissemination of information, education, and intergenerational dialogues. There is a lack of bottom-up approaches that include the youth and their voices as it relates to the decision making processes about climate change.
b. There is a need for empowerment by other climate activists, experts and colleagues which would serve as motivation for the Barbadian youth to take action and let their voices be heard in order to become future agents of change.
c. Provides the opportunity to showcase brilliant minds and the ingenuity of the Barbadian people.
a. Climate change affects us all, and its effects impacts the future of youth. It is against the background; meaningful youth engagement is needed. For many youths? engagement remains as simply as something to do, instead of having meaningful engagement which incorporates youth from different backgrounds, and more than just having youth at a session sharing on a particular day. Moreover, an element of meaningful engagement is the education element, through information dissemination in a manner understandable by youth.
Thematic sessions
Specialized events catered to addressing the particular themes and projects that are linked directly to climate change primarily through intergenerational discussions.
The Expo
This seeks to showcase the creative imagination of entities who are innovating and problem solving around the climate crisis. The booth spaces will highlight businesses in Barbados who are environmentally conscious and are creating innovations products or have environmental organizations. Selected organizations who have a booth will also have the opportunity to demonstrated to further highlight their product or services.
The Student Protest/March
Reflection on how Barbadian youth and children feel about climate action and calling for further action to be taken by those necessary stakeholders both locally and globally. Our children and young people will be marching because they want to demonstrate that they are fighting for their future and for their children?s future and believe that there is need to seeing everyone on board taking action for the climate crisis.
The Activity Hub
As we set out, to join the Barbadian Government, in planting one million trees, this activity would see students and the general public contributing to this effort and resorting to the numbers of carbon capturers across the globe. Our goal is to plant approximately 100 trees under this initiative. Other educational activities will also be included.
Student Declaration
As another tool, to amplify the voices of Barbadian children and youth this declaration will call on key stakeholders to get involved in climate justice and provided with reasons from our collective Barbadian student body. This will be presented to the Barbados Government at the end of the summit.
The Media Hub
Media accreditation will be a component at this summit which will include International, regional and local media houses. This will provide media houses will the opportunity to have their own booths at the event.
