The project developed a National Action Plan (NAP) draft on plastic waste management, A policy Gap Analysis that describes the legislative, institutional and policy framework for plastic waste management in Eswatini presenting a diagnostic analysis of policy gaps in plastic waste management and recommends strategies for addressing them. The project also motivated for the enactment of the Plastic Levy Return Filling System and levy collection through the Plastic Bag Levy Remittance beginning September 2023.

The project seeks to identify and prepare community based road shows for all environment commemoration days. The project seeks to partner with the Environment Authority on these commemorations and it will attract media coverage.

There is a general need for capacitating NGOs and CBOs on ideating and developing innovative projects, particularly in the waste sector. Further capacity will be required on monitoring and evaluation. Strong ties with the Eswatini Environment Authority, the National Steering Committee and the UNDP Accelerator labs have been recommended for this grantee and the community to ensure that adequate technical support is provided.

There is still a capacity gap between men and women in community development initiatives. All lot of focus on support from government and civil society, through other initiatives, has benefitted men more than women. Women play a significant role in providing food and income for their families in rural and peri-urban communities in Eswatini. Women also tend to be involved in more informal type of work. Women are more actively involved in waste picking and sorting and therefore the project seeks to prioritize supporting women in the community, particularly with skills and training on how to create livelihoods for themselves through plastic and other waste.

Yes, the project plans to engage in dialogues on reducing plastic waste with the aim of influencing the revision of the waste policy as well as supporting the implementation of the regulations which ban single use plastics. The regulations are currently receiving some resistance from certain stakeholders e.g. plastic producers therefore the dialogues will be an important aspect of supporting policy impact.

Yes. The project aims to ensure that all key stakeholders, in particular local community members and community leadership are involved in all stages of the ideation and implementation of the community based project. An inception workshop is planned where the community will participate.
