Protection for Corals
Protection for Corals
Oceans and seas represent the main aquatic habitats on the basis of the body of water in the world. This broad marine geography, which regulates the climate and plays a key role in the formation of biodiversity of living things, is also of primary importance for human life in accessing to natural resources that are crucially essential for human life. However, due to activities under direct human influence such as pollution, excessive and illegal fishing activities, the balance of the marine ecosystem is rapidly deteriorating and natural stocks are disappearing. Although the aquatic ecosystem balance, which has undergone changes due to global warming and pollution and deteriorated at a high level in some areas, contributes to habitat loss, it has been reported that the most destructive effect on marine life and their surrounding biota is the illegal fishing activities implemented excessively and the humaninfluenced practices like reducing forest lands, depleting wetlands and cleaning with dredging in harbors also accelerate the extinction process. Since the loss of biodiversity is a global concern, the sustainability of natural ecosystems, which is prior for healthy human life and its applications in management strategies, have become the focus of today's research topics. Marine Protected Area System, which was launched on a global scale to protect biodiversity and the sustainable life in marine ecosystems, gained momentum after half of the 20th century. It is no coincidence that coral reefs, rainforests, or mangroves known as the wonders of high biodiversity, are the primary targets for the initial conservation. Conservation zones are created in special nature areas to ensure the sustainability of life on earth and related occupational groups, and therefore human health. With the constant research in these areas and the contributions of citizen science, awareness in the protected areas is raised and protection and control are provided based on the management plans. In this study, biodiversity monitoring, determining the main threats of the fishing applications, revealing the paleobiological value and providing sustainability based on a management plan in the Dardanos Hard Coral Marine Protected Area hosted by endangered coral colonies are aimed. Within the main objective, there is also a planning to include Bozcaada Tuzburnu and Marmara Island coral reefs in the system of marine protected areas based on the precedent of the Çanakkale Strait.
