Protection of Brufut Community Bird Sanctuary
The project is designed to address some of the major challenges or threads to the Brufut community bird sanctuary which is currently under pressure by anthropogenic activities including encroachments by housing estate developers, illegal logging, illegal hunting and erosion. The sanctuary used to be a highly biodiversified and is a key stop over for migratory birds and harbor critical endangered wildlife and plant species. The effects of the pressure on the Brufut community bird sanctuary is alarming, hence the need protect and sustain the forest as a breeding place for birds and a shelter for both migratory, resident and endangered species. The project will also contribute to the source of income generation of the local community of Brufut through alternative livelihood activities.
Specific Objectives
? To protect and preserve the Brufut community bird sanctuary and promote it?s sustainable management;
? To develop a management plan and demarcate the forest area with boundary pillar to reverse the degradation of the forest;
? To strengthen the technical capacity and skills of community members in eco-guiding, bee keeping and soap making particularly women who are the most vulnerable.
? To create job employment opportunities and improve food and nutrition security of the community by engaging in sustainable supplementary livelihood activities.
Project Activities
The following are the main planned activities, and where there should be sub activities, as specified in the approved work plan and budget.
1. Conducting ecological survey and Mapping;
2. Clearing boundary edge and erect boundary pillars;
3. Drilling of borehole and install solar pump system for water supply;
4. Tree planting exercise;
5. Purchase and supply bee hives and 5 bee gear;
6. Construct Photo hide;
7. Construct an Eco-friendly refreshment centre;
8. Training on soap making;
9. Train on eco guiding for youths;
10. Purchased binoculars , telescope and field Guide books;
11. Monitoring and Evaluation including mid-term review and final review and reporting.
