Project Characteristics and Results

Policy Influence

In practically all actions of the Projeto nas Comunidades, Naturatins support was obtained. This participation, in addition to providing a technical debate among specialists, had the important role of listening to and having suggestions from community members in solving these problems, giving rise to the possibility of thinking about public policies for controlling fires in Jalapão. The partnerships established with the Municipality of Mateiros involved support actions for the use of vehicles and transport to community areas. Another novelty refers to the interest of the Secretary of the Environment of the municipality of Novo Segundo (TO), Mr. Lessa, who contacted ACAPPM in order to initiate the participation of extractivists from that municipality in the production of jatobá flour with the support of the City Hall. Municipality for the introduction of jatobá flour and other products in school lunches at schools in that municipality.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Mobilization and consolidation of the formation of family groups, including the characterization of their productive areas and territories. Organization of representation and communication strategies. Strengthen the participation of young people and women in the different stages of the project. Permanent prospection of new market opportunities for ACAPPM and other local Family Groups. Research to assess the need for support infrastructure (shed, kitchen, industry, vehicle, etc.) for the activities of collection, processing, primary processing, storage and transport of products. Strengthening of ACAPPM's administrative processes and improvement of the management of the commercialization and marketing of associated products.

Linkages gef projects

The Community Association of Artisans and Small Producers of Mateiros ? ACAPPM, with the support of Funatura, managed to approve a GEF project focused on Medicinal Plants for families residing in Mateiros and its surroundings. The expected value is R$ 270,000.00 (two hundred and seventy thousand reais). The productive chains of fava d?anta will be worked on (to extract the rutin) and the processing of sucupira seeds, with the acquisition of a machine for pressing and extracting the oil.

Replication of project activities

The Community Association of Artisans and Small Rural Producers of Mateiros ? ACAPPM will continue to lead actions to mobilize and organize rural producers and extractivists so that the collection/processing/marketing of fava d?anta expands to other territories. With the progress of the mobilizations and the engagement of the Communities, a great harvest of fava d'anta is expected, with a well-defined collection strategy, with the protection of the community (EPIs) and the instruments for collection (Podões) made available by the Project . The integrated fire management actions, after the training offered and donations of equipment to 8 different communities, also ensure continuity in the protection of these territories in relation to fires

Project sustainability

The management of the territory involves the Integrated Management of Community-Based Fire - MIFBC, an action carried out together with traditional communities under the coordination of the managers of Naturatins, the Jalapão State Park and the APA of Jalapão, which achieved expressive results in the management of golden grass and protection of nature. As of March 2023, due to the mobilization obtained by the project's actions, initiated with the Integrated Fire Management - MIF, Naturatins began to include in this participatory planning the management of fava d'anta and other species of interest to extractivists , supporting the sustainability of these value chains.

Notable Community Participation

The project intends to directly encourage the participation of young people from family groups as local mobilizing agents for the project, aiming to consolidate their interest and participation in family productive activities.

Capacity - Building Component

The project provides for two main themes for the training programs for beneficiaries, the first around the entity's managerial and commercial activities, while the second focused on agroecological management practices in productive territories and technologies for the full use of the fruits for each of the chains. environmental issues prioritized by the project (involving agro-extractivism and family farming).

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The project will provide good practices and innovations in the organization of production and commercial stages, where family groups will have, in addition to traditional activities, new job opportunities in the agro-extractivism chain, which will be important for the sustainability and expansion of the initiative; among them, new functions for the mobilization of production, control, administration, communication, marketing, monitoring and evaluation, processing and total use of the fruits, training of leaders, provision of services and others, both in productive and commercial activities, as well as in meeting the need to professionalize the activities of the Association.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The results of the project will be presented and evaluated internally, by ACAPPM and partners, and publicly, together with local actors, each time aiming to promote the learning obtained and the prospecting of new opportunities for the development of Jalapão's socio-biodiversity chains, in particular the strengthening of local and regional commercial relations, assessment of the productive capacity of territories and families, expansion of producer groups, diversification of ecosocial chains to be organized and consolidation of sustainably managed territories in the Jalapão landscape. The partner entities listed in item 57 and other local and regional actors involved in the theme will be involved in the public presentation of the results, and specific resources have not been considered for these moments that will be organized locally.

Policy Impact

The strengthening of production chains between the communities residing in the Park and its surroundings will strengthen not only the income of traditional peoples, but also the ties between communities, making the representation of communities within and around the park more expressive. in the sense of claiming their rights to land and public policies aimed at these populations.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

There will be no Indigenous peoples involved in this project.

Gender Focus

Young people, adults and elderly people of both gender traditionally manage, collect and use local agro-extractive resources, with the division of tasks taking place according to their own decisions.

Project Results

O projeto envolveu comunidades do Cerrado do Jalapão em áreas mapeadas de acordo com o registro do perfil socioeconômico das famílias que ocupam e utilizam território equivalente a mais de 100 mil hectares, sendo quase sua totalidade utilizada de forma sustentável, a partir de atividades extrativistas, criação de gado em pastagens naturais, produção de roça e quintais produtivos e artesanato. O Projeto apoiou a organização de base comunitária local por meio de capacitações e organização institucional, reestabelecendo a Rede Jalapão a partir da articulação e venda de produtos do Cerrado e atividades de capacitação produtiva nos territórios das comunidades envolvidas. A doação de equipamentos de combate a incêndios motivou o estabelecimento de seis acordos comunitários envolvendo o manejo do fogo.
