Managing Solid Waste and Building Awareness on the Environmental Impacts using Proper Waste
Management Systems
The aim of this project is to arm the residents of the community with an effective solid waste management system by stationing bins strategically in the community and creating awareness of waste management best practices. A formal recycling programme will also be established in the community by establishing relationships with stakeholders such as the National Solid Waste Management Agency (NSWMA), the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSMAC), the Ministry of Health & Wellness (MoHW), and community-based organizations. The project will also provide a platform for establishing greater commitments from public and private sector partners to continue to implement solutions from this project and others to improve the quality of life for the residents of Seaview Gardens.
Some Seaview Gardens residents have already taken the initiative to begin their own recycling efforts in the community. One household, in particular, has been spearheading an informal plastic recycling programme within their section of the community and has engaged the Recycling Partners of Jamaica to collect plastic bottles. This household has also begun an informal programme to repurpose old car tyres to plant flowers. This project aims to strengthen community-based monitoring systems like these and expand the system to the entirety of the Seaview Gardens community.
The project aims to provide the residents with a cleaner and ultimately healthier community that can be sustained long after the project has been completed, through:
? Plastic Stations Established in Strategic Locations - Set up six (6) self-sustaining recycling stations by 16th December 2022. The stations will be monitored by teams set up within the community to ensure that only recyclable plastics are discarded here. By directly involving the community members in the monitoring of the programme, they will be more invested in the maintenance and management of the project.
? Partnership with recycling Companies Established ? Establish partnerships with recycling companies to have recycling waste collected in a timely and efficient manner. These partnerships will also be leveraged to generate income from the collection of plastic bottles,.
? Increased Awareness and Behavioural Change - Three (3) quarterly workshops hosted to create awareness on proper solid waste management, community inclusion in the creating an effective solid waste disposal community system and engage dialogue with key stakeholders. Also, one community clean-up hosted by 30th September 2022.
