Improving the environment by switching from plastic to environmentally friendly materials in Comrat district

The settlements of ATU Gagauzia are experiencing an acute problem with the disposal of municipal solid waste (MSW), especially a large volume - more than 40% by volume are plastic waste. The classical way of waste disposal (container - garbage truck - landfill - reclamation) today is inefficient and, moreover, potentially dangerous, since even a carefully processed and covered with soil landfill is a source that is harmful to the environment. The region does not have a waste separation system and there are no relevant plans, mechanisms for intersectoral interaction and documents for the implementation of such systems.
The implementation of this project in the Comrat region will provide an opportunity to reduce the environmental burden in Comrat and 12 villages of the region and improve the sanitary situation in the region. selling the resulting raw materials for their further use in the processing industries. To effectively achieve the goal of the project, we will conduct a wide information and advocacy campaign to sensitize the population to solving the problem and involve the population of all 13 settlements of the district in the project activities. An additional effect will be the involvement of young people - students of the Theater (performances of social theater), Journalism (blitz polls, posts and articles on social networks) and Pottery (Competition of ceramic products, which will be offered to replace plastic products, fairs, sales, environmental exhibitions) circles of the Comrat House of Creativity, as well as young students from all settlements of the region. The measures taken by the applicants are also aimed at cleaning and disposal of spontaneous dumps in the territory of 12 villages of the district and in the Comrat district through volunteer environmental campaigns and of the activities of institutions for the collection and removal of waste ? Municipal Enterprise of Housing and Public Utilities (ME HPU), institutions in the villages of the region. This project will allow local authorities to solve several urgent problems in the Comrat rayon at once - improving the services for the disposal of solid waste, promoting the involvement of civil society in solving environmental problems. We will develop and implement an intersectoral district Action Plan for Comrat ? pilot project.
The press for plastic, containers and a vehicle for transporting containers to the landfill in Comrat purchased for the ME HPU will allow the introduction of a new waste disposal system and the creation of new jobs (driver, presser). The project will be implemented in 13 settlements of the Comrat region.
As a continuation of the project and to reproduce best practices, this Intersectoral Action Plan will be a model for the development of such plans for other districts of ATU Gagauzia. Other results obtained are the waste separation mechanism developed, the practices of involving young people, the use of creative methods of working with the population - TV video blitz, social theater performances, promoting the craft creativity of young people (movement: ceramics instead of plastic) - all successful practices of this project will be implemented in the adjacent regions Comrat based on the knowledge and skills acquired and based on long-term agreements with project partners - the House of Creativity, City Halls, and local NGOs.

Project Results

CSO Vesta project ?Improving the state of the environment through the transition from plastic to environmentally friendly materials in the Comrat district? started on August 1, 2022.
Activities carried out and results achieved.
1. Visit to the mayor?s office of the Comrat region with the aim of signing agreements on the joint development of the District Intersectoral Action Plan for the implementation of a system of separate collection of plastic waste. As a part of the project, villages in the region will contribute to the creation and implementation of a mechanism for environmental cleanup of the environment by collecting, sorting, preparing plastic waste for processing by pressing and selling the resulting raw materials for further use in processing industries. 13 agreements were signed and 140 people took part in these events.
2 . A study was conducted of the situation with the collection and disposal of solid household waste, including plastic waste, in all villages of the district. An analytical report on separate collection of solid waste has been prepared.
3. Purchase of equipment : muffle kiln, pottery wheel, vehicle for transporting containers, press for plastic processing.
4. A survey of the population about the dangers of plastic on the environment as part of the project. Young journalists from the Comrat House of Creativity prepared a video about the harmful effects of plastic on the environment.
5. Environmental action - liquidation of spontaneous waste dumps in all settlements of the Comrat district. Waste removal campaigns were carried out.
6. Training course for youth from the Comrat regional House of Creativity for Children on teaching social theater methods (training volunteers). Volunteers were told about working methods in social theater, about the harmful effects of plastic waste on the environment, about environmental problems and about the separate collection of plastic waste. A total of 67 participants (children) took part in the 5-day training seminar.
7. Environmental campaign - landscaping in 7 settlements of the district. 480 trees were planted in 7 villages of the district. 42 participants were involved in tree planting.
8. Performance of the Social Theater and eco-exhibition. Pupils of the House of Creativity for Children organized a speech about the harmful effects of plastic waste on the environment. During the presentation it was demonstrated that plastic waste when decomposed in the soil, they release toxic substances that can cause significant harm to both people, causing many diseases, and the flora and fauna of the region. In total, 297 participants ? children ? took part in the social theater.
9. Competition of ceramic products. In the ceramics competition, participants demonstrated their ceramic products and encouraged everyone to use environmentally friendly materials instead of plastic. ?eramic products for the competition were made using a potter's wheel and a muffle kiln purchased as part of the project. 10 participants took part in the competition.
10. Purchase of containers. A total of 18 lattice containers were purchased as part of the project for the separate collection of plastic waste. These containers were placed in the settlements of Comrat and village Chirsovo.
11. Distribution of posters about the dangers of plastic (100 pcs). Posters were placed in city halls , educational institutions, commercial companies and public places (in 13 localities).
12. A focus group was held with representatives of the NGO ?Vesta?, the Comrat District Administration, and the Comrat City Hall. Tasks are defined, priority paths and time frames for activities are identified. Number of focus group participants - 11.
13. A video about the harmful effects of plastic waste on the environment was created and broadcast on the websites of the Administration and the NGO Vesta.
14 . Final event based on the results of the project. The conference was attended by project partners - representatives of the Comrat District Administration, director of the NGO "Vesta" Ms. Volkova A.I., deputy mayor mun. Comrat Ms. Vlah I.V., mayor of the village. Kirsovo Mr. Sapunji S.D., as well as the mayor of the village Avdarma Ms. Kapsamun M.D., deputy mayor of the village Kongaz Mr. Kelesh I.G., representatives of the public and the mass media. There are 20 participants in total.
