Protection of Mediterranean Sea daffodil (Pancratium maritimum) on the Albanian Adriatic coast
Pancratium maritimum, or sea daffodil, is a species of bulbous plant native to the Mediterranean region. The flowers have a pleasing, exotic and very subtle lily scent, which only becomes apparent during still, windless summer nights that allow the delicate fragrance to become perceptible. Flowering is from August to October. The plant grows on sandy beaches and dunes along the coast.
Present day practices of well-groomed beaches that include ploughing at the beginning of the season have destructive effects on these plants. Currently this plant is classified as (EN) endangered. The project will consist in active seed and bulb transplantation in suitable habitats as well as the promotion of this autochthonous plant including lobbying at local and central authorities for designation of ?no disturbance? areas in the upper fringes of the beaches and dunes
