The purpose of this planning grant was to determine the feasibility of fully solarising the Soufriere Fisheries Complex and determine whether or not a percentage of the savings could be used to reduce cost of operations and establish a social safety net (pension scheme) for fishers. The completed energy audit revealed the following: (i) a 25 Kw solar system would be adequate; (ii) the system would cost approximately US$46,296; (iii) the system would save on average US$1133 per month or US$13,596 per year; and (iv) the system will be paid for in 3.5 years.

The energy concluded that the solar system would cause approximately 47.2% in annual savings and with the inclusion of additional conservation measures that percentage could increase significantly.

To assist the grantee, two consultants were hired for a total injection of US$43,606 into the community (Soufriere economy).

A Full Grant was approved with the conditions that all measures should be implemented to increase energy conservation.
