Sustainable Enterprise-Driven Solutions to Plastic Management Project in La-Dade Kotopon and Ledzokuku Municipality
The project intends to utilize private-public partnership to recover plastic waste within the selected areas (La-Dade-Kotopon Municipal (Capital: La) and Ledzokuku Municipal (Capital: Teshie-Nungua) with the assistance of integrated informal waste workers and establish sustainable enterprise-driven solutions to engage community individuals in green product developments. Following an efficient sensitization plan, the proposal is intended to create awareness within the public on proper waste management and segregation techniques to foster sustainability and community ownership.
2. Project Justification and Baseline
The project would tackle the global crisis of waste pollution and climate change. From the project, a model can be developed which can be scaled to other areas in Ghana and beyond on plastic waste management and public-private engagement.
The program will positively influence the SGP Country Program Strategy as it would provide a comprehensive guideline for waste workers integration which can influence policy implementation. There would be a percentage increase in waste collection, and engagement of waste workers and institutional research which can provide a base line date for policy formulation.
Ghana has demonstrated her readiness to end plastic pollution by joining the Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP) and outdooring the Ghana National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP). The Ghana NPAP in partnership with MESTI is supporting the country?s public, private and civil society sectors in transitioning to a circular plastics economy, which directly addresses the root cause of plastic pollution by fundamentally reshaping the way plastics are produced, used and re-used. This project is in line and would only serve as a steppingstone to plastic management in Ghana.

SDG 6: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all ? Improved collection (source separation) of plastic waste for recycling will reduce the volume of waste to be managed/disposed of
? Elimination of indiscriminate disposal of plastic wastes into open-spaces and drains and its attendant impacts (e.g. choked drains, localized flooding, etc.
SDG 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable ? Elimination of indiscriminate disposal of plastic wastes into open-spaces and drains and its attendant impacts (e.g. choked drains, localized flooding, etc. will ensure a more safe and resilient environment.
SDG 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns ? Reuse/recycle of plastics will reduce the rate of abstraction of new resources for production of plastics and its attendant waste generation and exploitation of natural resources.

SDG 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts ? Improved collection of plastic waste for recycling will reduce the practice of open burning of plastics which often results in the Greenhouse gasses and Unintended Persistent Organic Pollutants (uPOPs)
SDG 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development ? Improved collection of plastic waste will minimize or eliminate the disposal into open drains and stormwater channels which end up along the beach and in the Kpeshie Lagoon

Project Objective:
1. To establish sustainable enterprise-driven solutions in La and Teshie Nungua through public-private-partnership.
2. Promote Reduction in plastic generation via enacting refillable water Stations.
3. To achieve 100 per cent of registered households/residents segregating plastic waste from household solid waste streams.
4. To eliminate the practice of indiscriminate disposal and open burning of plastic wastes.
5. Desilt and clear existing drains, beaches, open spaces etc. in La of plastic waste
6. Ensuring proper coordination and integration of the informal economy services for efficient waste management.
