Environment education through participatory action learning (EEPAL)

The project will target to engage students of schools catering low income groups to create awareness among masses through students and educate students about environmental concerns by establishing environmental clubs in their schools.

Project Goal are to raise awareness of environmental issues and solutions, including global issues like climate change, loss of biodiversity, pollution of water bodies, stratospheric ozone depletion, etc. among teachers, school children, and parents by conducting following activities:

Organizing Parent Teacher workshops;
Training of like-minded NGOS in Islamabad and Rawalpindi;
Training and encouraging teachers to guide students through a set of purposeful environmental activities;
Forming environmental clubs;
Publishing Environmental Newsletter by EEPAL member schools;
Delivering EE talks and video shows;
Training of staff and students in "Origami", (Reduce & Reuse);
Promoting on campus cleanup and other cooperative work;
Conducting environmental posters, drawings competitions, etc.

Anticipated results of the project are more positive attitudes, greater knowledge and
practical skills to address local issues and to contribute to solutions for global environmental issues among target population.

Project Characteristics and Results

Project Results

The project was launched in 20 schools of Rawalpindi and Islamabad. As a result of the project activities following results were acheived:

The school principal and staff have incorporate environmental education into the existing curriculum of their schools highlighting national and global issues .e.g New Modern School staff has incorporated E.E into two subjects, Social Studies and Islamiat. The schools include written questions related to environmental issues in the examination papers for the students of all the classes.

Habit formation i.e taking care of the cleanliness of themselves as well as their school, house, markets and other public places. The outstanding example is of Comprehensive school where the staff and students with the guidance and support of the principal have shown a tremendous improvement in their ability to tackle the problems related to the general and specific environmental issues of their school. For one year they did the cleaning of the school premises themselves, as the they were not given any cleaning staff by the ministry.

Some of the schools have started separating the rubbish at the spot. Plastic, Glass and paper are sold to the cartmen buying used stuff and biodegradable material is utilized for making compost.

The students of all the member schools are portraying a very positive and responsive attitude towards 'Reduce, Reuse and Recycle'. Now they do not rely upon project or their teachers to give them ideas, but they themselves are very forthcoming with their own notions and concepts of how to preserve mother earth.

The project has not only created environmental awareness amongst the target groups The positive outcome is that it has also brought about a healthy habit change and a sense of responsibility and ownership amongst the target group to carry the programme further.

The Parent Teachers meetings have brought to the forefront active and supportive participation by fathers. They have come up with the idea of forming a consumer association in order to act as a pressure group.

The mothers are active participants of the project too; they are increasingly adopting
the 3Rs of environment.
