Strengthening the governance structures and enhancing advocacy roles of BCCA and member conservancies within Baringo county
Strengthening the governance structures and enhancing advocacy roles of BCCA and member conservancies within Baringo county
The 1st project grant was therefore meant to strengthen the foundation for BCCA and subsequently its member conservancies, through 3 objectives that are geared towards (1) strengthening governance structures, (2) improving institutional management structures and internal control processes and (3) strengthen BCCA partnership with Baringo County Government. The target beneficiaries are the BCCA and the conservancies in Baringo County. The implementation phase of this project began in September 2019 having received the 7th August 2019 for the first quarter. The implemented activities in this quarter were actualized on time, the 2nd disbursement on the 16th April 2020 happened amid the Covid-19 global pandemic with an undetermined working new norm. The implementations of the projects were slowed down. Despite the challenges, the association gradually achieved its objectives despite the prolonged period. The successful implementation of the first and second quarter built a solid foundation to run project activities in the subsequent phases.

However, most conservancies are grappling with issues emerging from lack capacity because they are still in their nascent stages, high environmental degradation resulting to high poverty rates. Limited exposure on how communities can benefit from biodiversity, thus limited models to learn from. Leadership of BCCA drawn from the nascent conservancy?s thus subsequent capacity. However, BCCA presents opportunity to harness and collectively build and expand knowledge on effective conservancy governance and management. To achieve this BCCA board and secretariat need to be strengthened and capacitated in addition to building a solid foundation for partnership with the County Government of Baringo.
