Gendered Incentives for Rural Livelihoods and Sustainable Forest Management (GIRLS) in Njemetop in Ikom Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria.
Gendered Incentives for Rural Livelihoods and Sustainable Forest Management (GIRLS) in Njemetop in Ikom Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria.
Njemetop has an estimated population of 3,000 residents. They are subsistence food crop producers, like cassava. Few of them farm cocoa as cash crop. They also gather non timber forest products like bush mango. Forest clearing for farming and accompanying bush burning are major drivers of deforestation. Community informants estimated their original forest size to be about 15,000hectares, and current forest cover to be less than 30% of their total land area, compared to over 50% in 2001. As they lose their forest, soil and crop productivity are declining, watersheds are damaged, limiting access to potable water. Low environmental awareness, low capacity for land management and sustainable agriculture, poverty, limited economic opportunities, and non-inclusive governance, acerbate the challenges. This project goal is to strengthen sustainable forest management through inclusive social governance and secure rural livelihoods. The project activities include: 1 - Community Entry and inception meetings; 2 - Community organizing (including 2.1 Constitution of Forest Management Committee and 2.2 Land use planning); 3 - Livelihoods improvement (including 3.1 Cocoa agro-forestry and 3.2 Cassava processing); 4 - Construct 1 borehole; 5 - Community Forestry (including 5.1 Raise tree nursery; 5.2 Regeneration; 5.3 Establish 2-hectare woodlots; and 5.4 Fire management); and 6 - Knowledge Management. The expected outputs include: (1) 200 community members participate in community entry and inception meetings; (2) 20-member FMC formed and land use plan developed; (3) 2 farmer cooperatives established for cocoa and cassava and supported on value chain development, 1 cassava processing facility established. (4) 1 motorized borehole constructed. (5) Nursery with 5,000 seedlings of indigenous species raised, 2,000 bush mango seedlings provided, regeneration carried out in at least 25 hectares of deforested land, 2-hectare woodlot established, fire tracing conducted. (6) Information about project is available in appropriate formats and Wold Environment Day is celebrated.
