Addressing Biodiversity Loss and Effects on the Traditional Medicine Practice of the Ugbe Indigenous People of Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State, Nigeria
Ugbe people are subsistence farmers and traditional medicine practitioners using harvesting from the community forest. With a population of about 5000 thousand inhabitants (2006 population census estimate); the women constitute about 54 percent of the population. The community is challenged by the effects of climate change including irregular rainfall, increasing temperatures , biodiversity loss, deforestation and loss of soil fertility. This change is very consequential and manifests in the reduction in incomes generated from farming, production and sale of traditional medicine and reduction in water availability which has significant effects on livelihoods. The community is ignorant of the issues or not empowered to proffer solutions. The project?s goal is to reduce the loss of biodiversity and its effects on the traditional medicine practices of the target beneficiaries. This goal relates to GEF SGP Nigeria National Strategy outcomes 2, 6 and 7. The following are the project activities: 1) Awareness creation and sensitization of 500 persons on biodiversity conservation, climate change and afforestation. 2) Training of 100 Community stakeholders on biodiversity conservation, establishment of nurseries, planting of 2000 indigenous tree species. 3) Training of 50 youth on sustainable traditional medicine practice. 4) Establishment of a community seedbank. 5) Formation of a cooperative and registration with relevant regulatory body. 6) Enactment of a community bye-law and formation of community forest guards.
