Mitigating the Impacts of Erosion and Land Degradation in Ido ? Ekiti, Ido/Osi LGA, Ekiti State
: Ido Ekiti, in Ido/Osi LGA, is a semi-urban community in Ekiti State, with an estimated population of 100,000 who are predominantly farmers. The community occupies the highest topography of all the towns in Ekiti State, at 570m above sea level. As such, issues of severe land degradation and soil erosion plague the township. This is further aggravated by inadequate paved communal roads and well-defined natural or constructed drainage facilities resulting in poor road access to market, schools and homes. Another contributory factor is poor waste disposal and management. The goal of this project is to mitigate the impact of soil erosion and land degradation in Ido-Ekiti, bring about access to better communal road network and drainage systems and minimize the negative impacts of road deterioration on social and economic conditions; and promote environmental awareness and proper waste management practices, thereby preventing flooding by 100%. . The project activities include: Workshops and Town hall meetings for youths, students and market women on Waste Management methods such as Composting for vegetable Farmers, Recycling business, and the Effects of Poor Waste Management e.g. Flooding, Health hazards; construction of communal and drainage systems in Imila, Isolo and Omodewa township roads; Removal of solid waste from drainages and canals. All these activities are expected to: 1) Improve the condition of the roads by 40%, prevent flooding and soil erosion by 40%, increase social and economic conditions of the communities by 40%. 2) With increase awareness and participation in composting, will result in an increase in production of organic fertilizer which Farmers will be encouraged to use reducing the use of chemical fertilizers by vegetable farmers by 30%. 3) Increase in economic activities by the residents and cleaner environment.
