Reducing Marine Plastic Pollution through recycling in Karomanjiji communities Abuja Municipal LGA, and Kutunku community, Gwagwalada LGA, Abuja, Nigeria
Reducing Marine Plastic Pollution through recycling in Karomanjiji communities Abuja Municipal LGA, and Kutunku community, Gwagwalada LGA, Abuja, Nigeria
Karomanjiji and Kutunku communities have a population of over 435,000 people and generate an estimated 350 tonnes of plastic waste monthly. Due to poor infrastructure and a low understanding of the negative impacts of plastic pollution, there is a high rate of indiscriminate waste disposal in these communities. The project will start the development of manhole covers prototype from plastic waste to replace the metal ones that are constantly stolen for sale in the black market. The lack of manhole covers has been identified as one of the ways that plastic waste migrates into our water bodies. The project's objective is to reduce plastic pollution in water bodies, contribute to environmental protection, empower women and community members financially, and encourage behavioral changes in people. The project is set to build a prototype for the mold of producing manhole covers, empower 500 women recyclers, over 100 local waste pickers, and 15 waste aggregators. This will help with a monthly collection of 150 tonnes of plastic, which will total 1,200 tonnes in 9 months to help reduce the amount of plastic that enters our rivers.
