Participatory Management of Pesticide Based Plastic Pollution
Participatory Management of Pesticide Based Plastic Pollution
Today, pesticide packaging wastes have become an important element of the rural landscape in water channels, stream beds, field edges, garbage and excavation areas in regions where agricultural production is concentrated. Pesticide packages that are abandoned to the environment cause soil and water pollution as both plastic and chemical pollution factors, and pose a risk in terms of public health and food safety. However, there is no established and sustainable management model in terms of pesticide packaging waste in Turkey. In this regard, there are singular implementation practices carried out under the leadership of different institutions, only at the scale of provinces and districts. Plastic pollution caused by pesticide use is an important problem that threatens ecological assets and rural life in terms of KazDa?lar? and Edremit Körfezi, as in other areas where agricultural activities are carried out. This project aims to design and implement an alternative participatory and local waste management model with all stakeholders, with the aim of reducing plastic pollution caused by pesticide use in the region. In this direction, it will analyze the current situation by revealing the data on pesticide use and pesticide packaging disposal in the region and the reflections of the problem on farmers, agricultural engineers and pesticide sales dealers. At the same time, the relevant legislation and good practices in Turkey will be examined comparatively with examples from the world, and suggestions will be developed for the improvement of waste management. The information and suggestions put forward within the scope of the project will be shared with all stakeholders through meetings. With these meetings, it is aimed to create a participatory waste management model for local practice by receiving feedback. Guidelines will be prepared for different stakeholders in terms of the implementation of the model. These prepared guides will be shared with the public at different events and village meetings in the districts where the project operates on important days, increasing awareness about the disposal of pesticide packaging waste and providing motivation for a behavioral change in this regard, thus contributing to the reduction of plastic pollution caused by pesticide use in the region in the long run.
