R.E.S.E.T Greenery Program
Background:
The Restorative Efforts Securing Effective Transition, R.E.S.E.T Greenery program is located in Mount Poyer, St. Lucy. This is an Aquaponics System that consists of tanks for fish and greenhouses for plant life. The R.E.S.E.T Greenery program initiative was conceptualized in conjunction with the Barbados
Prison fellowship. This is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) which seeks to create opportunity for ex-offenders.
The prison fellowship seeks to ensure that ex-offenders are cared for by adopting a thorough approach in the rehabilitation of offenders which addresses the risks and needs of those offenders while inside prison and seamlessly followed through outside of prison.
This outreach program will play a critical role in the successful reintegration of ex-offenders therefore reducing recidivism.
This initiative consists of three distinct phases, namely, In-Care, Work Release, and Aftercare. However, the R.E.S.E.T Greenery program initiative will focus primarily on the aftercare phase.
It has been known that the first six months of release has been stated as the most vulnerable period for ex-prisoners, who are often confronted with and struggle with the harsh reality of re-entry into the society. Therefore, the R.E.S.E.T Greenery program will assist in providing some inmates to with job opportunities and training to allow them a smooth transition into society.
Environmental problems
The R.E.S.E.T Greenery program is designed for growing plant life and fish farming, both of which will be utilized for human consumption. The creation of this system is geared towards implementing and maintaining a ?greening? effect. The onset of climate change through global warming has seen the need to create such an entity and do things differently. Additionally, soil erosion is a major end result from climate change, thus, aquaponics will mitigate against the fallout from soil erosion.
However, this type of system can be impacted by a number of challenges. These challenges
include:-
I. Inclement weather that may cause damage to the green house structure.
a. The Island of Barbados is known for regular rain fall and there is the hurricane season from June to November. During these times the potential is there for severe damage to the greenhouse structure.
II. Plants dying
a. Plants can thrive in water, however, there is the potential of plants dying if the water PH level is not at the ideal requirement. Thus, it is necessary to maintain an alkali level for fish and a more acidic level for the plants. Further, it is necessary to ensure that the water supply levels are always adequate to maintain good oxygen.
