Owen Arthur Agrokids Initiative for Primary Schools
Problem: Lack of appreciation for the nutritional value of plants among youth and families. Lack of knowledge and experience in growing food crops and eating healthy. There is an opportunity to equip students with the knowledge and experience of tending to plants and at the same time educating them about the nutritional value and offering them healthier food alternatives, thereby mitigating some health problems.
In 2012, the World Health Organization conducted a global school health survey across 26 schools in Barbados. The results were worrisome: 31.5% of the students were overweight, 14.4% were obese, 70% showed low levels of physical activity and 65.3%were found to have a sedentary lifestyle after school. There is a lack of appreciation for the nutritional value of plants because youth and families have much easier access to lower cost unhealthy snacks and sugary drinks for the youth in and around schools when compared with the access to healthier and more nutritious foods like fruits and vegetables and natural juices.
