Island Sprouts Environmental Club
Island Sprouts Environmental Club
Environmental issues and their impact on our planet and island can often seem overwhelming
and leave us feeling hopeless. Barbados being a tiny Caribbean Island, is disproportionately
affected by climate change and environmental degradation - sometimes we feel as though there
is not much we can do. Many may also lack the knowledge and care for our natural environment,
and with the day to day struggles they face, do not see environmental issues as an immediate
priority.
AnchorBridge Environmental Inc. aims to address these sentiments with the creation of our
Island Sprouts Club. Island Sprouts Club is a nature-based education program focused on
providing hands on experiences where young people can be empowered to create impactful
change. Our programs are centred around engaging children in practical projects and
experiences, that encourage positive interactions with the natural environment around them.

Many Barbadian youth, especially those from challenging socio-economic backgrounds often lack
the opportunities to participate in meaningful change in their communities. In the past, many of
the youth programming around environmental issues have involved beach clean ups or
anti-littering campaigns. Though there is great value in these types of engagements, there is an
urgent need for children and youth to have a deeper connection and understanding of the
natural world.
Children are all born with a natural affinity, curiosity and fascination for plants, animals, and
creatures around them. Today they are spending less time outdoors and are more engaged with
technology than any other generation before them. This disconnection can contribute to a lack of
understanding/respect, fear, or discomfort with the natural world.
AnchorBridge Environmental?s Island Sprouts program goals are to:
? Inspire youth to adopt behaviours that positively impact our environment
? Give hands on experiences that have real world impacts
? Help youth develop a sense of understanding, responsibility, and connection to nature
? Create fun, engaging and age-appropriate experiences
? Provide leadership opportunities, tools, and resources to excel beyond the classroom
