Community-Based Sustainable Watershed Management and Livelihoods of People in Remote Areas of the Lao People?s Democratic Republic.
Kiewchiep and Marjouk villages are in Namore district, Udomxay province. Most people are Chmu, there are 272 households in these two villages, of which 24 households are classified as very poor, they do not have access to toilets and continue to practice open defecation. All households in these villages practice subsistence agriculture with slash-and-burn farming, which has low productivity. Annual household income is relatively low, about 15,000,000 LAK, and there is a shortage of rice for one to three months. The main problems are floods and landslides during the rainy season; drought and water scarcity occur between four and five months in the dry season because there are no streams or rivers near the village that carry water continuously. During drought, women and children have to travel long distances to fetch water for domestic use. Water is limited not only for domestic use, but also for crop planting, which has been affected by shifting cultivation, hunting, chemical use, livestock grazing in upstream watersheds, and illegal logging. The project aims to protect and rehabilitate watersheds in the villages of Kiewchiep and Marjouk by establishing a community forest and providing the target communities with permanent access to clean water and sanitation to improve their livelihoods.
