Strengthen the capacity of Civil Society, Local Actors, and Communities, including Youth and Women to Promote Climate Resilience and Adaptation.
The project is implemented in two villages (Khang and Tam) for 196 households in Xamnea district Houaphanh province. The villagers make their living from shifting cultivation, planting trees, rice cultivation, and livestock. 90 percent of the villagers rely on NTFPs for their supplementary income and food supply. The villages also have dense forests that they want to protect as a food source for future generations. Therefore, villagers in the provinces are highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change as their livelihoods depend on the land and climate situation. Forests and natural resources in two villages are declining as the population increases, leading to an expansion of agricultural land, which destroys wildlife habitats and forest resources. Natural disasters such as floods and prolonged droughts are occurring more frequently than in previous decades, severely limiting agricultural production. Forest committees in target villages do not function well, and youth and women participation in forest management decision-making in villages is low. Youth and women are involved in some activities in the villages, but they do not play a prominent role and are not able to support the work of the forest committee. The project aims to help improve the forest ecosystem in the villages by building a strong network of local forest advocates who effectively manage forest resources and services to create gender awareness and resilient farm families and communities. It also aims to improve the livelihood of the community by increasing household income through the improvement of forest products and agricultural activities to minimize the problem of land encroachment into the forest area.
