Project of Mangrove Conservation and Restoration in Tantou Village, Nansha District, Guangzhou
? Baseline:
Economic situation in Tantou Village
Tantou Village is located in the northeast of Nansha Street, Nansha District, Guangzhou City, along the coast of the Pearl River Estuary, located at 22°48'42? North latitude, 113°34'40? East longitude, consisting of Tantou, Dashanbian, Ma'an, Caochuan four natural villages. It covers an area of about 2 square kilometers, a village of about 600 households, with a population of about 1,300 people. The main family names there are Fan, Chen, Guo, Huang, Liang, and Ma. The mobile population of about 2,500 people, the jurisdiction of the Guangzhou Pearl River Power Plant, Humen Ferry, You Rong shipyard, Bp oil products, Jiantao chemical and other well-known enterprises, individual business households 46, the villagers' economic income to the factory enterprises to work, the village collective share of welfare mainly.
Basic information on mangroves in Tan Tau Village
According to the Study Report on the Biodiversity of Natural Mangroves in Tantou, Nansha, Guangzhou, according to studies such as marine geology and sporopollenology, there were historically large and dense mangroves distributed in the Nansha District, but due to long-term sea enclosures, polder farming, and urbanization, the natural mangroves have been almost destroyed. A study by Li Mei (2009) on the diversity of wetlands in Nansha, Guangzhou, found that only 63 h? of mangroves were found in Nansha District, and most of them were planted forests. At present, the surviving patches of natural mangroves in Tantou Village are rare in Guangzhou.
The mangroves in Tantou Village are mainly distributed in Caochuan Village, and the existing natural mangroves cover an area of 30000?, accounting for more than 70% of the existing natural mangroves in Guangzhou, and two old trees of Kandelia obovate, which are more than 100 years old, have been found. So the mangroves in Tantou Village have important conservation and scientific research value.
Policy Context
During the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, the Guangzhou Municipal Government attaches great importance to the construction of marine ecological civilization and the protection of mangroves resources, expecting to accelerate the pace of construction of marine ecological civilization in Guangzhou by increasing the comprehensive improvement of the ecological environment of the near-shore sea area in Nansha District and the effective management of the marine ecological environment. By 2025, Guangdong will create 5,500 hectares of mangroves and restore 2,500 hectares of existing mangroves, and the "Guangdong Province Mangroves Protection and Restoration Special Action Plan Implementation Plan" arranges for Guangzhou Nansha District to create 43 hectares of mangroves and restore 160 hectares of mangroves.
As Tantou Village already has patches of natural mangroves, it has not been included in the scope of the creation and restoration in recent years, but the mangrove restoration and protection activities in the area are of great significance and are currently managed by the local street office.
The Blue Carbon Initiative
In 2021, the Association participated in the mangroves status survey and assessment project in Nansha District, Guangzhou, and has a deep understanding of the status of mangroves in Nansha District.
? Main problems and needs
Main problems
(1) The natural mangrove species are relatively homogeneous, making it difficult to give full play to their ecological functions.
(2) Some plants (Mikania micrantha, fish vine, Sonneratia apetala Buchanan-Hamilton) encroach on the living space of mangroves, which easily makes other plants stop growing or even die, affecting the diversity of this ecosystem.
(3) The surrounding residents have insufficient ecological significance and awareness of mangroves, weak protection consciousness, and the survival environment of mangroves is still threatened in their daily life activities.
(4) The public generally has insufficient knowledge of mangroves, limited knowledge of the ecological functions and environmental benefits of mangroves, unclear responsibilities for their related protection, confused management, lack of scientific development and management planning for the existing mangroves, and even more so for the mangroves polder and indiscriminate occupation causing artificial destruction, so that the mangroves ecosystem is threatened.
Needs
(1) Scientific replanting of some mangrove trees according to the growth of mangroves in this area to enrich mangrove species and improve ecological benefits.
(2) Continuously clean up invasive tree species/those that pose a threat to the growth of other tree species to effectively improve the diversity of this ecosystem.
(3) To establish a voluntary protection group for the natural mangroves in Tantou Village with the residents of the community and public welfare organizations so that the natural mangroves in the area can be effectively protected in the long term.
(4) Relying on the voluntary protection group, we will enhance the awareness and protection of mangroves among the surrounding residents and the public through online and offline mangroves ecosystem science, protection awareness training, and nature education activities.

Recognition of contributing groups and individuals.
? Anticipated results
The replanting of about 300 mangrove trees of 100cm will improve, to some extent, its uneven distribution and simple community structure in order to protect the coastal zone and marine ecosystem. In addition, the public's practical participation in the replanting of mangroves plays an important role in raising their conservation awareness and practical ability, and in this way, forms a driving and demonstration effect to boost the conservation awareness of mangrove ecosystems.
Obtain support from the street office and local civil affairs system to form a stable mangroves protection volunteer group with a core staff of 50 and a total number of volunteers of 300 or less, which will operate stably during the project cycle.
Through a series of mangroves-themed activities to raise public awareness of mangroves awareness and protection, it is expected to reach more than 50,000 people.
Investigate the carbon stock situation of natural mangroves and form a report.
The research association will take the lead and invite government management, experts and scholars, participants, and representatives of local residents to participate in the conference to summarize the relevant work and commend the contributing groups and individuals in order to promote the spirit of volunteer dedication.
