Permaculture solutions against land degradation in Tatev
In Armenia, more than 80 percent of land is exposed to degradation due to industrial agriculture, unsustainably designed human settlements and pollution. This has led to local food insecurity, higher food prices, contribution to climate change, environmental hazards, and the loss of biodiversity and ecosystems.
The project proposes permaculture approach as a simple, accessible and inexpensive approach to solve these issues. This approach is gaining popularity across the world, however, it remains virtually undiscovered by the people of Armenia. To start introducing the solutions offered by permaculture to Armenia, the project aims at educating and empowering youth through training modules developed for high school students. It will teach them the principles and ethics of permaculture, providing practical tools and mindset to revive the abandoned land next to their schools and sustainably grow an abundance of food for their communities in small spaces.
The project team will create the first Armenian training course on permaculture. Based on this course gamified steps will help students to transform the abandoned areas surrounding their school. Thanks to online content on permaculture, such as practical exercises, tests and multimedia, the youth will develop technical skills to create their own permaculture design for a specific area. The project will back the youth project initiatives on permaculture by advertising, finding the respective experts and providing management, PR and fundraising support.
The project will work in the Tatev community with a possibility to expand further.

Project Characteristics and Results
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
A new educational program will be developed on permaculture, it will offer solutions to the most significant environmental issues in simple steps that anyone can achieve, starting from a very young age. Topics covered will include sustainable land management design, regenerating degraded soils, designing water systems, sustainable waste management systems, grazing management, animal care and pollinators, designing sustainability into the built environment, wild harvests and management, working with air and climate in sustainable systems design. School-level content on these topics will become available in the Armenian language for the first time to change the way Armenians see their role in the environmental equation. Developing a whole-systems-thinking approach in students will be one of the main goals of the project aimed at encouraging them to think about environmental sustainability in every aspect of their lives.
Policy Influence
Armenia has all the resources needed to meet 100% of the population?s food demands, however, a considerable amount of food needs to be imported since the agriculture sector is not able to meet these demands. Much of the problem stems from inefficient and damaging use of natural non-renewable resources, including soil, water and space. This project sets out to showcase the gold standard permaculture alternatives to industrial food production systems used in Armenia. It is planned to inspire changes in food so that more of the population?s requirements are sustainably grown and distributed locally, but also how non-renewable resources are used and in the management of waste.
