Saint Lucia Honeybee Species and Identification and Requeening Project.
This project has four distinct components as follows: (i) The Planning and Implementing of the Second Hewanorraa National Honey Show in Saint Lucia; (ii) The Viral load analysis of the bees of Saint Lucia; (iii) management strategy to address the results from number ii; and (iv) support to the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (EISA) of the Ma kôté Apiculture and Learning Institute. The project objectives are as follows: : (i) To conduct stakeholder consultations in order to identify key beekeepers across the island who will participate in this project; (ii) To evaluate and report on the level of hybridization of the Apis sub-species in Saint Lucia; (iii) To evaluate and report on the level of harmful pathogens and viruses that affect bees and possibly other important endemic pollinator species in Saint Lucia; (iv) To improve honey quality and understanding of the product, through participation in the 2nd Hewanorra National Honey Show; (v) To develop and implement a strategy to address the level of hybridization and disease loading in hives in Saint Lucia; and (vi) To contribute technical and financial resources for undertaking the EISA for MARLI.
