Encourage Famers to Use Biofertilizers and Sustainable Agriculture to Reduce Soil Degradation
Champasack Province has targeted agricultural production as one of the most important components of the province's economic development. Champasack Province focuses on "promoting agricultural production, especially farm management, food security, affordable agriculture, and livestock, according to the specific conditions and potential of each locality, to meet the consumption needs within the province and the market for goods from outside. Allocate and manage water resources for sustainable agricultural production; Promote the modernization of agricultural production; Promote the production of plantation seeds, livestock species, food grains, biofertilizers, and agricultural production methods to reduce imports from overseas and reduce production costs. Fertilizer production is one of the main focuses in the province. In addition, the province's production target aims to produce 2.52 million tons of rice, 694 thousand tons of food crops, staple crops with bilateral contracts amounting to 5.2 million tons, 498 thousand tons of fruit trees, 2.6 million tons of red coffee, 275 thousand tons of rubber and other economic crops. These goals require the use of fertilizers in significant quantities (Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Champasak Province, 2021).
The importation of flutes can be summarized based on information from the Ministry of Industry and Trade. Lao PDR imported flutes from 18 countries, with the value increasing steadily each year from 2016 to 2019. In 2016, the total value of imports was $42,341,242. In 2017, compared to 2016, the value increased by 34% to $56,531,144, and in 2018, the import value increased by up to 70%. 74,490,394 dollars and in 2019 by 16% compared to 2018 to 86,156,568 dollars. The value of these imports is very high. In terms of imports for 2017, 2018, and 2019, imports from China are in first place, followed by Thailand and Vietnam. In 2020, imports from Thailand will rank first, followed by China and Vietnam.
It is indicated that the import of fertilizers in Champasak province at the end of 9 months of 2020 was 18,776.90 tons worth $3,323,057.39. According to the statistics of the Ministry of Industry and Trade for 2020, there are four factories in Champasak Province, of which only the IOA Plus Biofertilizer Factory operates normally with a production capacity of 30,000 tons per year. Based on the available agricultural land, the demand for fertilizer in Champasak Province is at least 100,000 tons per year. We can see that the demand for fertilizers in Champasak province is still high.
To reduce the import of chemical fertilizers, our team would like to promote the use of biofertilizers and sustainable agriculture to avoid the use of chemicals and reduce soil degradation. To this end, a center will be established to learn how to produce high-quality biofertilizers from local materials and provide organic fertilizers to farmers. The project can be divided into two different types of beneficiaries: The direct beneficiaries are 63 ethnic households in Phououy village, including 38 families, and Phoumarknao village, which includes 25 families in Paksong district, Champasak province, where our project areas are located, who will be hired as day laborers for many other project activities.
