Environmental Mitigation and Alternative Livelihood Project in Zhipe Community, Karu Development Area Nasarawa State
Zhipe community with a population of about 3 million population is seriously affected by seasonal floods and erosion problems which have made their farmland unproductive and this has made the people to be involve in the cutting of trees for firewood and charcoal as their major source of livelihood. Also the river in the community floods during the raining seasons making the farmlands inaccessible. As a result of the seasonal flooding in the community majority of the farmland are eroded, degraded and abandoned and the major livelihood is selling of firewood and charcoal, mostly by women. Zhipe community is in Karshi Development Area of Karu Local Government Nasarawa State, close to Karshi a suburb of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), is less than one hour?s drive to Abuja, the nation?s capital, but its inhabitants are too far from civilization. Thus this project is tailored towards assisting this community in planting of trees , carrying-out environmental interventions using techniques such mulching, cover cropping, contour tillage, terracing, land reclamation using conservation measures, cut off drainages and water collection centres/borrow pits including alternative livelihood programme to mitigate the falling of trees for firewood/charcoal and environmental and conservation education so that the community know the implication of tree cutting practice. These activities will enable this project reclaim selected eroded, abandoned farmlands in Zhipe community and tackle gully and sheet erosion problems to mitigate the environmental challenges they have.
