Saving Nigeria's Elephants in Yankari Game and Omo Forest Reserves through awareness and advocacy.
The African forest elephant Loxodonta cyclotis and savanna elephant Loxodonta africana are Critically Endangered and Endangered respectively base on IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Baseline data on elephant in Nigeria showed that ~100 savanna elephants remained in Yankari as at 2015 compared 300 individual recorded 2011. Twenty-Eight elephants were reported for Omo Forest Reserve in 2017. In 2019, only 300 elephants are taught to now live in Nigeria. Against this background, the goal of the project is to implement a media-based awareness campaign program as a strategy for information dissemination and awareness raising on elephant conservation in Nigeria. We want to reverse decline in elephant number and loss of habitat for wildlife. First, we will use both SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) and stakeholders' analyses tools at the planning stage of the project, to analyze stakeholders by their power and interest. Second, organize meetings/workshop to engage, educate and raise awareness on elephant conservation in school pupils and youth in local communities as well as create school clubs and youth clubs for elephant conservation. Third, Media production via engagement with elephant sites, and local schools and communities. The media team of Channels television Nigeria have agreed to partner with CBCN to make a production/documentary on importance of elephant conservation. This will also serve as documentary for the engagement with school pupils, local communities, and Protected Areas.
