Community-based Forest Landscape Restoration in Maroghinoba and Inikorowa Communities in Ovia South-West LGA, Edo State, Nigeria
Inikorowa and Maroghinoba are two among 12 communities, adjacent to Okomu NP and critical to the success of conservation efforts at the park. They are predominantly farmers, with a combined population of about 10,000. However, severe forest degradation due to widespread logging coupled with climate change threaten the survival of the park and surrounding Forest Reserve and food security of these local communities. This project will pilot sustainable forest management (SFM - agroforestry and bee-keeping) and incentivize local farmers and other forest users, through a sustainable business model and partnership with government and private sector for long-term forest restoration, applying the Incentives for Ecosystem Services (IES) approach. As a result, 10 Ha of degraded areas will be mapped and restored, 150 farmers/forest users (up to 40-50 women) will be trained and two SFM practices adopted, with over 50 people having improved food productivity and income. 20,200 Ha of protected forest will be better managed under a restoration agreement and a policy roadmap for adoption of IES will be developed.
