Provision of Early Warning for Flooding and Pollution in Makoko Eegun Community, Yaba Local Government, Lagos, Nigeria.
ERF had worked with NIOMR to conduct a preliminary survey on water quality test, pollution source and the impact on fishing activity, livelihood and health of inhabitants in the target community. The forum agitated for water treatment plant as well as borehole water necessitated this proposal. The community will provide the project site (space), labour and security. Procurement and installation of measuring equipment, with the aim of monitoring the baseline information of some physico-chemical parameters on surface/groundwater, and to train locals on their usage. An early warning system that will inform potential flood occurrence will be issued in advance to the community via social media platform. Five boreholes will be drilled to know the depth of saline/freshwater contact and the effect of leached pollutants on the subsurface. Sample collection and analysis for heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants, aimed at determining the pollution and health status of the surface water and also the safety of seafood within the community shall be captured. Local youths will be trained on monitoring and use of instruments that will be provided. Five telephone sets will be provided for officers at each station for communication between the institute and the locals with a central laptop for collation of data. Five boreholes will be drilled to monitor flooding and pollution. Water samples will be taken from each borehole, while fish samples will be taken from the lagoon to analyze the persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and heavy metals, to monitor exposure of locals to pollution..
