Project of Biodiversity Investigation and Conservation in Bagan Township, Qumalai County, Qinghai Province
Project of Biodiversity Investigation and Conservation in Bagan Township, Qumalai County, Qinghai Province
Baseline:
? Resource status: The terrain in the territory is complex, with high mountains and deep valleys, forming a unique biodiversity. There are many wild animals, wide distribution, concentrated production areas, large reserves, and high economic value. There are 592 species of higher plants, and valuable medicinal materials include Cordyceps Sinensis, Fritillaria, rhubarb, snow lotus, etc.; there are more than 30 species of wild animals, which can be divided into six orders, 15 families, and 19 genera. There are mainly white-lipped deer, blue sheep, snow leopard, musk deer, red deer, Tibetan fox, red fox, wolf, lynx, and brown bear; more than 60 species of birds in 13 orders and 13 families, mainly black-necked cranes, whooper swans and bearded vultures, Tibetan snow chicken and so on. Except for a few Chinese herbal medicines that have been collected, most wild animal resources are yet to be developed and utilized. The main tree species are Berberis Chinensis, Alpine Spiraea, Caragana, Juniper, Yinlumei, Jinlumei, Shansheng Liu, etc. Plant distribution changes in the order of forest-shrub-meadow-grassland from southeast to northwest. The plant composition is relatively simple, the community is generally low, mosaic and overlapping, and the growth is slow, reaching the altitude limit of cold-temperate coniferous forest distribution.
? Main source of income: Bagan Township is a pure animal husbandry area dominated by Tibetans. Due to the influence of many unfavorable factors such as geographical location, environment, climate, and inconvenient transportation, the local economic development is restricted, and the foundation of animal husbandry is relatively fragile. The net property income is low, and the source of income is single. Bagan Township is rich in Cordyceps resources. Besides cattle and sheep, Cordyceps is the main source of cash income for local herdsmen. In addition, there are ecological management staff salaries and grassland subsidies. Due to the influence of the grassland area and the number of cattle and sheep raised by the family, the income gap between local herdsmen is large.
? Tourist resources: Gaduojuewu Mountain, one of the four great sacred mountains in Tibetan areas, is alternated with blue sky and white clouds. It shows the unique natural landscape and customs of the plateau and has certain development potential.

? Main problems:
Bagan Township, Qumalai County, has rich ecosystem types, such as forests, shrubs, grasslands, mountains, etc., which have bred rich wild animal resources. This area is located in the core area and buffer zone of the Tongtian Riverside Reserve of the Sanjiangyuan National Nature Reserve. Although the reserve has carried out a wild animal survey, due to the large area of the reserve, the survey is not comprehensive and is mainly based on artificial transects. , only the list of wild animals that may be distributed in this area has been mastered. With the rapid development of technologies such as infrared cameras and unmanned aerial vehicles, it is no longer possible to rely solely on wild animal lists to support the formulation of protection policies. Data surveys on the distribution and population of dominant species such as snow leopards, blue sheep, and white-lipped deer are particularly important. In addition, after the pilot project of the Sanjiangyuan National Park system in 2016, the area is no longer within the jurisdiction of the national park, and the corresponding functions of the reserve have also been transferred to the national park. Residents' living standards, the development of ecological training, nature education, eco-tourism, and other green industries have created obstacles. At the same time, with the intensification of human-animal conflicts caused by brown bears, snow leopards, wolves, and other animals in recent years, if we can understand the range and rhythm of activities of these species, it will provide scientific support for slowing down human-animal conflicts.

Activities
? Background investigation of wild animals in Bagan Township
? Promotion of ecological environment protection.
? Raise herdsmen's awareness of wildlife and environmental protection

Anticipated results:
? Master the background data of large and medium-sized mammals and ground-dwelling birds in Bagan Township, Qumalai County. Through continuous two-year monitoring, image data and species catalogs of local species distribution were obtained. The higher the rate of shooting species by infrared cameras, the larger the population of the species and the more frequent the activities. Therefore, during the one-year monitoring by the infrared camera, we will also obtain the relative size of the species population, which will help to provide local data for macro-decision-making, such as population status assessment of local rare and endangered species, regional ecological planning, and biodiversity protection.
?Cultivate a group of professional ecological trainers and ecological managers to lay a solid foundation for future wildlife monitoring and protection. Relying on the association through long-term professional knowledge training, continuously improve the comprehensive quality of association members and local ecological management staff, mobilize their work enthusiasm and guardianship ability through measures with clear rewards and punishments, and provide a basis for in-depth monitoring of rare and endangered animals in the local area in the future Do a good job of talent reserve.
? Form a "new fashion" for everyone to participate in ecological and environmental protection. The association attracts local college students returning to their hometowns for regular fixed-point or mobile publicity training so that the majority of herdsmen can establish the environmental protection concept of "lucid waters and lush mountains are golden mountains and silver mountains", deeply understand the uniqueness of local wild animals and plants, and the necessity of protection, thus forming a national Participate in the new fashion of ecological protection.

Project Characteristics and Results
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
Activity 1 Project activities: publicity of ecological environment protection (mobile publicity of Cordyceps season and fixed publicity of workstations) Relying on this association, we recruit college students who return to their hometowns to join and rely on local college students to carry out science popularization to the herdsmen (especially women and children) who go up the mountain to dig medicinal materials so as to ensure the income of the herdsmen while not destroying the vegetation of the local pastures, so as to ensure the health of the pastures. From February to March, the fixed-point publicity theme of the workstation: infrared camera layout and recovery data training meeting and environmental protection publicity meeting, one time, ecological management staff; Mobile promotion of Cordyceps season in May: Correctly dig Cordyceps, prevent brown bear damage, protect the ecological environment, 3-5 days, local herdsmen; In July, the workstation's fixed-point publicity theme: protect the ecological environment, promote cultural self-confidence, 1-2 days, ecological management staff, and local herdsmen. September workstation fixed-point publicity theme: Infrared camera deployment and recovery data training meeting and environmental protection publicity meeting, one time, ecological management staff. The theme of the fixed-point promotion of the workstation in November: Infrared camera monitoring helps wildlife protection, one-time, ecological management staff. During the two-year project implementation period, a total of at least ten promotions will be carried out. If due to reasons such as the epidemic, online or public accounts will be used instead. Activity 2 Project activities: According to the monitoring results of infrared cameras, grasp the areas with a high frequency of brown bears, set up warning signs for brown bears, and release relevant information on the official account of the association in a timely manner.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
In the short term: Promote the development of associations, project personnel, and ecological administrators; improve the theoretical and practical level of biodiversity protection; reduce the probability of brown bear casualties during the Cordyceps season. In the long run: ecological environment protection is a great cause of "contemporary achievements and future benefits". The local rare wild animal resources, the "Gado Juewu" sacred mountain, and the diverse local habitats will continue to attract mainland tourists, laying the foundation for them to obtain stable economic income in the future. At the same time, the sustainable scientific excavation of Cordyceps and medicinal materials ensures the sustainable use of local grasslands and the long-term vitality of herdsmen.
