Hurricane Lisa Recovery and Resilience Building in the Community Baboon Sanctuary
Hurricane Lisa Recovery and Resilience Building in the Community Baboon Sanctuary
The Community Baboon Sanctuary (CBS) /Belize River Valley communities were severely impacted by passage of Hurricane Lisa on November 2nd, 2022, packing winds of 85-90 miles per hour that left families homeless, displacements of population including students whose school building were destroyed, damage to Crops and other livelihood activities, stress and shocks to families including persons living with disabilities and children. The CBSWCG conducted damage assessment from November 3rd -6th in coordination with village chairpersons within all 7 communities in the CBS. At the end of the assessments, of the 58 households, 11 persons are now homeless, lost all possessions and are now residing in shelters, 22 suffered total loss of roof and all household items, while the other 25 suffered partial loss of roof and damage to households? items. 23 farmers reported destruction to crops of rice, corn and root crops, fruit trees loss of chickens, turkeys, and coops. The damage to the forest is severe and will take years to recover. The CBS was forced to closed due to the destruction and struggling to find the resources to clean up the trails. Fallen trees and shrubs can pose a secondary threat to wildfires if the dry season is severe like what occurred after hurricane Richard in 2010. The CBS communities have been trying to rebound from COVID-19 of which many have not been called back to their place of employment, the recent flooding caused by hurricane Ian although it did not have a direct hit on Belize, and 40 days later suffered a direct hit from hurricane Lisa. Belize urban was also severely impacted by Lisa, and thousands of families suffered the same faith as the CBS communities. This led to authorities and relief organization, clean -up crews from all over the country to direct all the focus and humanitarian aid to Belize City, while the other communities in the Belize District are given very little attention and are left to manage the effects on their own.

Project Characteristics and Results
Gender Focus
Immediately following all clear issued by NEMO, the CBS staffs started consultations with the village council chairpersons, that was followed by visits to conduct rapid damage assessment. in each community. Village chairpersons were asked to conduct a more detailed analysis and needs of the damages and to submit the CBSWCG. A total of 58 households were assessed and shared by VC chairpersons along with photographs, # of persons affected ect. The information was slow to come in due to loss of power and internet service in the area. Once the information was received the CBS forwarded them to NEMO and the Red Cross. Even before the hurricane Lisa, there were community consultations meeting held in partnership with the MFC and WCS for food security within the CBS. Agroecology, backyard gardening, root crops were ranked as the top three priorities for the CBS communities. This type of community participation and collaboration is expected to continue throughout the life of the project.
Inovative Financial Mechanisms
The knowledge of the project beneficiaries and community leaders about the risks and impacts of increasing hazards and what they feel is contributing to the cause is very important as that will be the starting point to design project and programs such the introduction of climate-smart agroecology farming practices, for food security and how they can contribute to forest reforestation and climate adaptation. Workshops will be conducted to engage stakeholders to capture knowledge sharing and management for future reference and education.
