Conserving the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park & World Heritage Site through Habitat Conservation, Awareness Building and Ecotourism Activities
The primary objective of this initiative is, ?to support conservation of this world heritage site through
habitat conservation, awareness building and ecotourism activities?. Habitat conservation helps to
conserve, protect, and restore habitats and prevent species extinction or reduction in population. This
project supports the GEF SGP OP7 Focal Area of Biodiversity Conservation by strengthening a civil
society organisation for financially sustainable biodiversity conservation management. It also supports
Jamaica?s National Development Plan ? Vision 2030 (which is linked to the UN Sustainable
Development Goals) by contributing to the achievement of Goal 3 ?Jamaica?s Economy is Prosperous?
? through support for environmentally sustainable socio-economic development for rural and indigenous communities and Goal 4 ?Jamaica has a Healthy, Natural Environment? ? by promoting and facilitating conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services including recreation.
There are three (3) expected results: -
1. Hectares of Significant Ecosystems with Improved Conservation ? this will be done on 10
hectares of land through trail improvements at Holywell which will include labelling native and
endemic species with signs and interpretive signs along trails and other areas, erecting rails and
improving steps for safety,
2. Improved Revenue Generation Opportunities ? this will be done through the construction of one
solar powered wooden cabin for visitors? overnight stays for nature tours and bird-watching.
This will increase visitation and therefore income. In addition, the awareness raising activities
will encourage visitation for guided trail tours and other visits. Also, tour fees will be better
regulated through an improved reservations management system that will provide online
booking and payment from outside Jamaica.
3. Increased Awareness on the Importance of Conserving the Protected Area ? this will be done
through the promotion of guided trail tours and visits to the Discovery Centre & Gift Shop on
social media and improvement of the exhibits and lighting in the Discovery Centre.
