Protecting our Natural Resources while Supporting and Promoting Sustainable Livelihood in South-East
Cockpit Country
The primary objective of this project is to protect the natural resources while supporting and promoting sustainable livelihood in South-East Cockpit Country. This initiative is well aligned with the GEF focal area of Biodiversity Conservation and Land Degradation and Sustainable Forest Management. This initiative will also support the Vision 2030 Jamaica goals 13 & 14 and several SDGs. The expected results are listed below. This initiative will allow community members to not only set up businesses for themselves but change the economic landscape of these communities and empowers these vulnerable groups to be visible in their efforts in the areas of climate change and food security. The communities in South- East Cockpit Country will have a greater awareness of the application of agroforestry as a more viable alternative as opposed to yam production.
? Hectares of Significant Ecosystems with Improved Conservation Status ? 2 hectares of land will be
reforested with the planting of fruit and timber trees. Reforestation activities will include land
preparation (Weeding, Lining, Pegging and planting).
? Improved Livelihood Opportunities ? this will be done through the expansion of the existing apiary
to include 50 colonies of bees for bee-keeping and honey production, and the craft production
programme through the purchase of three (3) industrial machines to increase employment
opportunities especially for the youths. Also, a demonstration plot will be established and seedlings
for strawberry and mushroom production on private plots from reputable vendors.
? Improved Capacity and Increased Awareness ? this will be done through capacity strengthening of
group members and community members, training on the application of agroforestry techniques,
apiary management, honey processing, craft production, climate-smart farming which will allow
youths, women, and the elderly to learn more about crop diversification and new agricultural
techniques in the farming certain crops. Also, training will be done in water harvesting to enable
Committee and community members to learn local mitigation strategies against the impacts of
climate change. In addition to trainings, workshops/seminars will be conducted on climate change
and environmental awareness.
