Gülbahçe Bay, located on the Urla Peninsula, provides a suitable environment for diverse industries including fish farms, water sports, and tourism. Plastic waste produced by these industries and consumers, reaches Gülbahçe Bay through wastewater discharge on Tatar Stream and indiscriminate disposal on beaches, increasing the microplastic concentration in the marine ecosystem. Microplastics (<5mm) escape the attention of people since they are not visible to the naked eye, yet microplastics carried in the food chain cause the balance of the marine ecosystem to derange and the health of people who have multidimensional relations with this ecosystem to be negatively affected. For instance, zooplankton fed with microplastics, the concentration of which is increasing day by day, leads to the presence of plastics in the metabolism of other living beings, primarily fish, through the food chain. According to recent studies aimed at solving microplastic pollution in aquatic ecosystems, nature-based solutions were proposed including native microorganisms being able to carry out microplastic removal. This project aims to characterize plastic pollution and investigate relevant nature-based solutions in Gülbahçe Bay, an area that has not been studied before, with citizen science based contributions. Raising public awareness of microplastic pollution and forming a basis for the development of policies on the inclusion of microplastic concentration limits in the water discharge regulations of municipalities will be the outcomes of this project.
