Combating Land Degradation and Sustainable Forest Management in Kathekhola Rural Municipality
Combating Land Degradation and Sustainable Forest Management in Kathekhola Rural Municipality
The overall goal of the project is to ensure that vulnerable, rural communities have reduced vulnerability and increased resilience to the anticipated impacts of land degradation in Kathekhola Rural Municipality. The overall objective will be achieved through three interrelated specific objectives, including (1) to increase the awareness and capacity of vulnerable local communities to design, implement, and monitor combating land degradation and sustainable forest management activities; (2) to promote alternative sources of energy such as bio-gas, improved cooking stove, and sloping agricultural land technology (SALT) to strengthen the resilience of vulnerable local communities affected by land degradation to better respond to and cope with climate change (land degradation); and (3) to pilot low carbon, viable and appropriate technologies and approaches to stimulate a learning environment and promote the sharing of good practices.

Project Characteristics and Results
Inovative Financial Mechanisms
The project will capture knowledge, leverage local expertise and give voice to civil society, identify new approaches and ways of learning, improve effectiveness, improve capacities of staff, promote and encourage innovation, influence policy and scale up good practices. The project will develop a knowledge management plan with a corresponding budget that allows the programme to capture their experience as well as to access the training needed to carry out the projects. The project will document and share best practices and learning on combating land degradation, sustainable forest management, sustainable livelihoods and best agricultural practices by organizing regular meetings with LGs, CSOs and private sector.
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
The project will continue to work with the existing social capital such as community-based organizations to communicate the goals, activities and results of the project with the community members, other community-based organizations and other key stakeholders. The project will support and deliver Outcomes 1, 2 and 3. Utilisation of the existing social infrastructure will enable extensive outreach of project in communities as well as good understanding of constraints that inhibit the land degradation and sustainable forest management. It also offers a measure for the exit strategy of the project. The inclusion of CFUGs, VFLM groups, Farmers? groups and Mother?s groups will ensure; i) poor and women are included in project interventions; ii) mobilise collective efforts of small landholding by support the CBOs; iii) facilitate access to markets and service providers for the poor and women; and iv) most importantly, ensure women are not excluded from the benefits of the interventions. The project will closely monitor to assess progress and outcomes before replication on a wider scale. The M&E framework will reflect on appropriately designed output and outcome indicators to capture the project results, produce information for course correction, and generate lessons and feedback for improving the project designs for replication.
