Enhancing local Communities' Capacities and Resilience to Smart Innovative Agro-Reforestation and Agroecology that mitigate deforestation of ecosystem around the East Nimba Nature Reserved (ENNR)
The project being Enhancing local Communities' Capacities and Resilience to Smart Innovative Agro-Reforestation and Agroecology that mitigate deforestation of ecosystem around the East Nimba Nature Reserved (ENNR). Climate change is expected to cause adverse effects on agriculture around the globe, with many countries showing increasing concerns about its possible devastating repercussions. Earth temperatures are expected to increase by approximately 2 ?C in the next 100 years, which will result in dramatic changes in rainfall patterns in many parts of the world Liberia is no exception and particularly in dry areas. Temperature and water availability are major determinants of plant productivity. Limited water supply (drought stress) and warmer temperatures (heat stress) will certainly reduce crop production. Liberia is no exception, especially the East of Nimba, where the Nimba Nature Reserved is situated. Crop production is expected to drop by approximately 5% at each 0.5 ?C increase in temperature, which will cause deprivation and famine, affecting human well-being.

Moreover, the East Nimba Nature Reserved (ENNR) forest land cover had been greatly reduced. The East Nimba Forest Reserve had lost about half of its land since 1974, the forest is cover by encroachments by human activities through traditional methods of agriculture (shifting cultivation or ?slash and burn agriculture), logging (large-scale commercial deforestation, illegal carving of planks using chainsaws, known as pit-sawing), illicit mining and the local collection of firewood by communities? dwellers for survivors (income generation purposes). All these human activities have caused the hostile effects of climate change. To mitigate and help communities to adapt to alleviate those adverse effects of climate change and protect East Nimba Nature Reserved (ENNR) which is an important means to cut down carbon emissions. Humanity Care Liberia (HCL) has written this proposed project to improve sustainable innovative agro-reforestation, climate-smart agriculture, and agro-ecological initiatives among the people which are alternative livelihoods programs, such as lasting preservation of the agro-forest system and ecosystem and provide alternative livelihoods to reduce deforestation and encourage the retention and the management of the forest, land, and rivers. Humanity Care Liberia (HCL) in eight (8) months will provide capacity training and support to enable the inhabitants to restore degraded land through agro-reforestation practices after three years when the project implementation even expires; which will lead to an increase in knowledge, generation of adequate incomes for farmers, create additional jobs, alleviate hunger, and on the overall to contribute to Liberia?s reduction/cut down of emission/greenhouse gas to 64% by 2030.

Project Characteristics and Results
Notable Community Participation
An in-depth consultation has already taken place, with discussions beginning in 2022 with community and stakeholders representative. This proposal has evolved as a direct result of that consultation process and a pre-project development visit which was undertaken from October by the NC.
Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples
Local Environmental Volunteer Groups will be trained in effective environmental education techniques.
