Waste Management
Waste Management
Solid waste has turned into a serious concern in Communities in Sanniquellie City, Nimba County. Loads of garbage are regularly discovered near houses, communities, market areas and many open spaces in Sanniquellie. This is producing considerable environmental concerns and health hazards.. The population of Sanniquellie is growing exponentially, and urbanization is accelerating. Government in the majority of emerging or transitional cities major challenge is solid waste management, due to the effect of unorganized solid waste disposal. This has had an adverse effect on environmental health, particularly in Liberia. Rapid urbanization, economic growth, rising standards of living, and changes in consumer habits and lifestyles have all contributed to a rise in solid waste. There have been assessments of solid waste management systems in Sanniquellie City (trash storage, collection, and transportation) as well as the city's resource recovery and recycling, waste treatment, and disposal. Some international organizations/partners as well as the Environmental Protection Agency were involved in the collection of pertinent data. According to the United Nations Conference on Human Settlements, one-third to half of solid trash generated in most low- and middle-income cities is not collected, but instead ends up in illegal dumps near houses, open spaces, and waste lands. The project will be implemented in five (5) communities in Nimba County. These communities are Dahnlorpa, Neipa, Fangalo Street, Veipa and Garmagbain Communities) in Sanniquellie City
The objectives of this project are to:
To minimize the disposal of solid waste at the generating point itself.
2. To conduct awareness, education and training programs on 3R+ and
promote solid waste management at household levels.
3. To establish a Model Waste Collection, Separation and Recycle Centre.
4. To capacitate Caritas Sri Lanka National Centre and 13 Diocesan Centre
staff through Training-of-Trainers programs to be able to conduct echo
training programs to others on solid waste management.
5. Networking with relevant Government agencies to supplement their efforts
