Fostering a Sustainable Seaweed Mariculture Industry via South-South Exchange with Stakeholders in Belize and Mauritius
Fostering a Sustainable Seaweed Mariculture Industry via South-South Exchange with Stakeholders in Belize and Mauritius
TASA in collaboration with the Turneffe farmers and the BWSFA will carry out a knowledge exchange with partners in Mauritius. The exchange aims to introduce seaweed seed propagation technology and value-adding from Mauritius to Belize which will go a long way in shoring up the development of the industry. This will entail not only the exchange of information but also the exchange of skills. Five (5) key persons from key entities who are involved in seaweed Mariculture will be carefully selected to participate in a learning exchange to be facilitated by technicians from Mauritius. On the other hand, Belize will share with Mauritius its experience with stakeholder collaboration and community engagement in the development of the seaweed industry locally. TASA and its partners have been engaging government authorities in the development of critical aspects of the policy and government framework of the seaweed industry in Belize. This experience and lessons learned from the process will be shared with partners in Mauritius. The community-based approach that has been taken locally to ensure community involvement and lessons gained from this experience will also be shared including training and farming methods.
